Use good quality screen wash and use the washers frequently to keep the wash moving through the system.

Yep as above really, good quality washer fluid.
I had an issue with both my Merc and Zed around the same time with this. I only use the Autoglym stuff now, use the sprays more often and have not had a problem since. I put it down to modern sprays instead of jets and larger opaque tanks so the water goes stagnant.

I flush the reservoir out periodically with the hose. Bacteria can build up and blacken the water or if standing for a long period of time it will turn to the gloopy jelly you mention.

A teaspoonful of alcahol or bleach (added before topping up) will kill the bugs that cause the gunk. Years ago, screenwash had it in but no doubt elf and sifty got involved!I also only use distilled or filtered rainwater (when possible).

I use kettle descaler, then a few flushes and top back up with a strong screenwash.

I put around 500ml of methylated spirits in every time I refill the washer bottle with screenwash and water. Helps to prevent smearing and keeps the system clean.
Started doing this over 30 years ago and have never had any problems with gunge or blockages. |

As stated in a previous post, a weak bleach solution will kill the bacteria or Milton’s sterilising fluid is good

I have used Milton in the past on bunged up systems .. Now that the bottles are rarely next to the engine and thus not heated by it, has seemed to reduce the risk . I always use washer additive as opposed to clean water and have not had a problem for years including classic cars which are not used frequently.

Any good quality screen wash will contain bactericide to prevent smells and slime formation. Some contain isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol) or ethanol (ethyl alcohol) which are both bactericidal. 'Methylated' spirits is ethanol with some methanol and a bittering agent added to render it unpalatable. Household beaches will kill bacteria in the reservoir before rinsing and refilling, but I'd avoid mixing it with the screenwash myself (bleaches contain sodium chlorite/hyperchlorite/chlorine). They are quite reactive and may slowly degrade the actives in the fluid.
