I've got loads of odd jobs to do on the 75, so going to try and keep track of everything here!

To do list at the moment is:
  • Cloudy headlamps
  • O/S front lower arm bush
  • Bonnet badge
  • Leaking boot

My headlamps are awful, I've tried rubbing down and polishing before, but the improvement doesn't last long, I guess any UV protection has been rubbed away by now.

I've got 2nd hand units to replace these, it might be nice to be able see in the evenings.

Bumper off, no seized bolts

Someone took a lot of time screwing up all this newspaper packaging!

New vs Old

For some reason, on both my second hand units the lamp units had come away from the housing - some searching suggests this is quite common and that the solution is often separating the lens from the housing or drilling a big access hole! I managed to wedge my hand inside, line things up and pop it back together, took a good half hour of messing around though.

Halfway there

Other side had a damaged mount which has been repaired previously - only the repair meant the rivets pushed the whole lamp unit forward I figured three out of four fixings would probably be ok, so drilled out the rivets and fitted it in - nice and solid.

That looks better

Next up, a vanity project! The front grill badge looked awful, I got a cheap replacement from ebay

WP_20180106_13_21_26_Rich by Matthew Leigh, on Flickr

I believe the new one is from a V8 rather than the cheap film on the standard facelift grill

Unfortunately it's shaped slightly differently so the 3M tape on the back didn't touch the grille. I was going to use some sikaflex to attach it, but that has set in its tube. I'll have to finish this job off tomorrow.

I also added some new foam seal to the waist trim at the two furthest back clips. I'm not sure its going to help, both clips are deformed (NLA?) and the one further forwards that clips rather than bolts on is also loose. The car was hit by someone a couple of years ago, the bodyshop did a good job, but this has started leaking recently

Hi Matt.
The lights look loads better, you did a good job in repairing them as those lights do not take kindly to traveling in the post at all.

The badge you fitted does it have the to nipples on the rear as here in the photo below.

If so you may need to drill a couple of holes so the badge will fit in to the curve recess properly, or you could try and cut of the nipples with a sharp wood chisel.

When I changed mine back in 2010 I decided to fit the original Rover 75 badge i drilled a couple of holes for the badge to fit properly good luck cheers Arctic.

Hey Arctic,

Thanks, the difference is amazing having been out this evening, I can actually see the road!

However, if I was sensible I would have checked the adjusters worked before installing the lamp units....the N/S lamp is ok, the O/S is far too low. Unfortunately both adjusters are broken, the nut part of the blue cog is broken.

I'll have to try and adjust with some pliers for now, I might start again though and try and fit these lenses on my old units. I read 5 minutes in the oven at 90C helps ease the lens off - what do people use to refit the lens, or does the existing sealant work well, maybe back in the oven after fitting?

With regards to the badge, yes its one with the lugs, I think I had already seen your topic so drill holes for these. It sits on those but the bend of it just seems wrong so it sticks up in the middle. Slightly irritating as other than that its much better quality than the original.

Re the broken adjuster, you can fit one of those cable blocks onto the spindle, pull it to where you need then tighten the screw on the choc bloc
3M headlight cleaner will clear them very nicely.
Yes you put the units in the oven & reuse the mastic.

Hi Matt - when I got my ZTT about a year ago and joined the club I found a great list of things that all new owners should do and have been working trough them (when the weather is kind).

Mostly all done now, perhaps you still have the same larger list to complete?

Fit Gold fan resistor & S/S handbrake compensator, clean plenums, polish headlights, modify bonnet cable and replace VIS motors were the main ones on mine. Plus a good clean and rust-proof underneath and numerous minor cosmetic jobs of course.

If you need your A/C regassed and don't mind driving down to St Albans I can get my brother to do it for you. He operates a mobile A/C re-gassing service in the North London area but is over my way regularly. Mine is ice-cold now (well it was when it was warm enough outside to notice)

Hi Vacuman,

I grew up in St Albans and still work in Hatfield. Thanks for the offer, I may get back to you, I think my condenser needs replacing first though as I get lovely heading missed from the day even after a regas.

My list is pretty similar to yours, no VIS motors on the 1.8, but plenum cleaned (and Jules' shield fitted which does a great job!) headlights now done, resistor done and bonnet release half done - I did turn it the other way round. Compensator is the next big job to get sorted I think - although air con would be nice this summer

Just had a quick look at things this morning, one of my new (to me) headlamps is too high and needs adjusting, all the adjusters are seized though.

There is little room to work, but I can't be bothered taking the bumper off at the moment. The cogs for adjusting are just spinning on the spindle, so I prised the cog off of the troublesome headlamp, sprayed some plus gas around the base of the adjuster spindle and rocked it back and forth with some mole grips.

Its moving now, but adjusting takes some time as there is little room to twist with pliers/grips.

I'll head out again when its dark and see if I can make any progress.

Thankfully managed to adjust the light

WP_20180113_17_15_45_Rich by Matthew Leigh, on Flickr

Its a bit tight but you can see the remains of the adjuster in the middle of the photo, with perseverance you can turn it with some long nose grips. Next job will to be to try and bond the proper adjuster gear on

NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-...

One of the neighbours reversed into the 75 last night, at least he admitted to it unlike the previous 3(!) times our cars have been damaged since we've lived here.

Seemed like a good guy, was fairly upset about his mistake. Hopefully the insurance company won't try and write it off....
