Smile Normal garage or forum specialist

Being based in Norwich for just a couple of years and noticing how all the T4 equipped forum specialists are hundreds of miles away, i am less than sure who i should have looking after my ZT 190+.
Certain important jobs like belts/waterpump/thermestat already recently done so no worries there.

In no particular order the following advisories or faults will need doing in due course. Being hopeless at most practical car mechanics does not help matters

Sparkplug replacement (precautionary, my thoughts!)
Screenwashers dead
handbrake!
offside front trackrod end ball joint slight play
rear discs slightly rusty.

To put things in perspective car drives fine and i am loving it

Left to my own devices will tackle most of these on a regular ongoing basis before next mot, a year away!

My local garage spotted osf ball joint as soon as he drove it (advisory on prev mot) so all singing from the same hymm sheet.

Do i stick with my local man, who does a tremendous variaty of local cars
as well as a lot of until recently servicing on the staff cars of the Caterham F1 team, now moved but Caterham remains! (based in my villige!)Minimal Rover experience though?

I guess some jobs any garage can do, some best left to a specialist?

TBH someone like Sean at Bexhill would be my 1st choice, with a T4 session also, A guy at Coventry from this forum who advertises servicing etc also.

Just don't fancy a 3/4 hour journey each way, although bexhill on sea on a sunny day becoming attractive with improving weather...

Anythoughts most welcome

Thanks

Mark

There's nothing in that list that any half decent mechanic couldn't do with his eyes closed

I'd obtain and fit a modified handbrake compensator myself, then have the local garage do the rest, that way if/when they replace the rear discs you could get them to adjust your handbrake at the same time

Speaking to some people I've been told that Holden still have a T4 but don't have anyone who can use it at the moment?

I recently used Kelly Clarke up in North Walsham who have a T4 and was pretty reasonable cost wise.

We are a little lacking in dedicated ZT/75 mechanics in this area, if we ever manage to get away on holiday I'l planning on heading over to someone like Jules to give my car the once over!

I've had a couple of recommendations for Kevin Fairweather:

Swanton Road
Norwich
Norfolk
NR2 4LR

01603 301 555

http://www.kevinfairweather.co.uk (appears to be down or being redesigned or something)

Recommended by Jay on here and someone on another forum. I haven't used him yet myself, I still seem to be going to the same place I have for years in Kings Lynn which is a bit of a trek but I trust them. However, I am considering using Kevin Fairweather for my clutch when it's due (Jay had his clutch done by him).

Doesn't have a T4 (so Holden's would be your best bet, but I've been warned off using them for anything as most/all of their MG Rover mechanics left) but by the sounds of it the prices are good and they even offer an over night service so your car isn't out of commission for too long.

Jay said to me (and to others) to say "Jason with the blue Rover 75 sent you"

Hope this is of use to you and would if you were to go to him I'd appreciate seeing some feedback.

So tempted to make an independent garage directory/review site if such a thing doesn't already exist.

I will never use this charlatan again. I went in there for a diagnosis on why my steering wasn't right and an oil leak on my MG ZR TD, and he went and did a diagnostic (basic ODB2 scanner) and came up with some total rubbish about a power steering code and suggested I'd need a new power steering pump or even a new steering rack and along with the leaking crankshaft seal (which he was right about) and oil cooler (which only needed the pipes changing but he was insisting the whole cooler needed changing) he quoted me over £1300 to get it all sorted out. Little did he know, I have my own ODB2 scanner and knew for sure there was no such code on there about the power steering, and worse yet, it's a purely hydraulic power steering system on those cars without ANY electrical components or sensors to kick up any codes. Also, turns out, that the steering problem was the stupid low profile tires on the wheels I had bought second hand!

Really? He seemed OK to me however I'll defo think twice about using him now, thanks for the heads up!
Thankfully I do have an excellent mechanic that I use for most things in Yarmouth, have used him for 12 years now and he's never let me down however he doesn't have a T4

That's the thing, he seemed very pleasant, knowledgeable and the place looked well equipped and clean (obviously paid for by ripping people off). I almost fell for it and shelled out the money but my paranoia paid off and I went onto .org to find the information I needed to know that he was telling porkies. Finding a decent mechanic is a bleeding nightmare which is why I still drive all the way to Kings Lynn (J & I Motor Engineers if you're interested) to get my car done. It's a sad state of affairs really. Been stung by so many mechanics by trying to find one local to me at home (I only work in Norwich).

Try Richard Nash in the centre. My best mate happens to run the service desk there now. They are no the cheapest however I know from talking to him that they do a good job!

If my Yarmouth mechanic ever stops doing it then my cars will go there.

Thanks the flood of advice, had noted Kevin fairbrother from my previous question about servicing etc,
I work in Norwich during the working week so could use them or stick to my very local garage.
Does seem my little list of jobs any reputable garage could do. Could well be i won't need the benefits of a proper Rover 75/ZT specialist anytime soon....

As this thread ilustrates having a T4 is not the be all or end all of choosing someone.

Thanks all,

Mark

I think http://www.peterscottlrs.co.uk/ in Wyndham have one, used to take the freelander there and I have a recollection of a conversation we had.
