On a slightly different tack - does anyone have close neighbours who have wood burning stoves installed?
Despite the sunshine, we've had a few cooler nights, and a selection of neighbours have been using their stoves for a bit of heating. The problem is the amount of ash they produce. A clean and polished car, after one session of somebody else's wood burner, is covered in white ash. At the same time, there are times when we have to close all our windows, as the smell of the wood burners can be quite invasive. Is it possible my neighbours are using any old scrap timber, which may cause the smell and the ash - or is this par for the course with wood burning stoves

That's par for the course here to Rod, I always like the bedroom window open all year round and if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction I have to shut it.
I awaken with stinging eyes regular from smoke especially through Winter time and the taste of smoke at the back of my throat, I gave up woodbines decades ago for my health .

It's at it's worse when they are burning unseasoned fresh wood.

There are six houses within 500 yards of me that have wood burners, one of the houses even has one in his conservatory so I get a double helping from him at times.

Funnily enough, one neighbour buys in "proper" logs - and he doesn't create half the problem that the others do - they're obviously using any old timber

Thank you Rod, it’s like being in a bad dream. Anchy’s mum was there when the accident happened. I wasn’t driving, but was opening the gate when she ran under the back wheel of the 4x4. Her mum saw us take her off to the vet and when we returned she knew Anchy was no longer there and was crying out for her. I spent this evening trying to console her.

Anchy will now be over the Rainbow bridge. New smells and old friends to make the journey easier.
Memories will always live on.
Thank you Bob for those words which are comforting and are really very kind.

Thank you Andy for those kind words. Yes it’s been a bad year, but we have got through it knowing there is someone always worse off. But then someone else said to me tonight, that person is me. I was lost for words....they meant well. My thoughts are how to help Anchy’s mum over the next few days and weeks ahead.

Thank you Ian. In the final moments, Anchy did not suffer and after she was laid to rest, I said a prayer over her. We are fortunate to have a pet cemetery in our grounds and next to them is a family cemetery where Jessica’s sister and mum, their remains are laid, under the Prunus blossom trees. It is very pretty at the moment, I visit most days. Rest in Peace

Evening all.

As I said earlier Phil, so very sad for your loss.
Losing a pet is always painful but knowing you gave Anchy 11 of the best years she could have ever wished will be a comfort to you.

RIP Anchy.

Good morning Jeff, thank you for those kind thoughts. Yesterday, I was chatting to my sister in law who lives here in our compound/in her house. She has 3 dogs and 2 of them are on their last legs. A Labrador aged 14 and a St Bernard aged 12. The other is a young and boisterous Border Collie. The St Bernard is prone to being aggressive to other dogs and in the past has eaten puppies. Because of that we won’t be getting anymore puppies until the St Bernard is put down.
