MoT Pass on 19 Year Old Car
Just returned from the garage with an advisory free MOT on my Omega Estate.
It will be 19 years of age next Thursday. Rather pleased, as I spent 3 days putting in new spark plugs, leads and a DIS pack to cure a minor misfire. Being the V6 with very restricted access, this is a major job that can only really be accomplished by relocating the DIS to an accessible location, which I did. I also replaced all the rubber hangers on the exhausts as the old ones were starting to crack and made sure that everything else was spot on before taking it in for the MOT. The next journey of 380 miles return to drop my son back at Southampton uni on Saurday should be a pleasure. |

Well done

Well done that car! A good result at any age let alone 19 years. I had a Vauxhall Carlton 1.8 GLS and it was a very nice car to drive. Chris |

Respect.
I wonder how many other Omega estates there are out there with such a history? Sounds like a truly reliable, solid car. Andy. |

Great news indeed!
Of course this will all be a thing of the past if powers that be have us all driving around in battery cells on wheels |

Thank you gentlemen. There are a few Omega Saloon and Estate in very good condition on the roads, but not many as production ended in 2002. It has an excellent owners club/forum with some very knowledgeable people.
It is a very solidly built car, designed before weight reduction became popular and this shows in the mass and robustness of all the underbody components. There a are number of weak points, e.g. rear wheel arches rotting, oil coolers that rot and leaking cam covers when the breather pipes block on the V6 but there are well documented solutions to all known issues e.g. later stainless steel oil cooler. I had everything done at 8 years of age as a matter of course and this has really paid off in terms of reliability. My hope is to keep it roadworthy until the teenagers leave university in 3 years time and then use it to tow my 6-foot cut flail mower on our sheep field. The mover has its own V-twin engine for cutting so just requires towing with a quad or some other vehicle. The low-end torque of the V6 and the car's comfort will prove ideal! |
