Default Can You Believe It!

Trip to local Halfords today (3 miles away) to get front & rear brake pads, 1 metre 8mm overflow hose and 2 hose clips for same. Brake pads need to be ordered for delivery to the store tomorrow, overflow hose out of stock, 8mm hose clips out of stock. Both items MIGHT be in tomorrow.

Three rock bottom stock items, OK they won't sell many sets of brake pads for a ZT-T these days, but 8mm hose and clips are basic stock items for use on many cars and other applications!
Perhaps they take up to much shelf space and leave space short for polish, sun glasses, air freshners, etc, etc, etc.

Stopped off at B&M for a replacement flexible shower hose 1.75 mm connection. None in stock ('We don't sell many of the 1.75mm size' said the assistant. 'I'm not surprised considering you don't have any' I replied. this completely confused the girl so I left, B& Q is just up the road, thankfully.

Am I dreaming when I think back to a time when shops stocked basic items, or was that on a different planet??????????????

It's the bean counters, it cost money to keep goods on the shelf without a definite order having been placed for said goods!

Yes I agree, but it must cost just as much to keep shelves stacked with tins of polish and air freshners. Perhaps there's more mark-up on those

The same is true with petrol stations, these days.
Try getting a tub of grease or some fuses.

All decked out with pizzas and lager though!

It’s a specialist who will hold stock. Allcap in Gloucester will always have what I want and almost any quantity. They sell nuts, bolts, screws, washers, clips and other fastening items. Tools, grease, liquids, cleaning and abrasive items. It’s an Aladdin’s cave for all things automotive and DIY. In 15 years they are yet to let me down. Bought nuts bolts and washers just a few days ago to replace the ones I removed when I changed the fan and condenser on the V6. Put it all back together with the fresh stuff and it all looks a whole lot better.
I would agree with the idea that Halfords and such like probably sell more air fresheners and enjoy a far higher mark up. It’s not for repairers anymore. It’s retailers looking at what they sell most of and going with that. Before Woolworths went bust they deleted 17,000 product lines that were simply taking up shelf space. It was too late by then. You just can’t be all things to all people anymore in retail.
Find a specialist and support them is what I say.

I went to the plumbers merchants when I needed a longer shower hose, saved any hassle of trailing about shops. The shower hose my old flat had was no good to me lol. The brake pads I bet Euro car parts would've had them in stock lol
