Default Rover 75 Con Se CDTi 2003 - intermittently won't start

Hi all

I've had zero problems with my Rover untl now, but now it intermittently won't start. Pretty sure it's not the battery (it eventually starts fine) or the starter motor (just clicks once, doesn't seem to attempt to spin the starter and eventually starts fine)

Oddly, if I wait an indeterminate amount of time, it will eventually start with no problems

I sounds similar to another thread I found on here about the camshaft sensor, but in this case it doesn't matter whether the engine is hot or cold and that seemed to be the petrol engine whereas mine is diesel

Anyone any ideas?

Have you checked your fuel pumps, particularly if it’s requiring a lot of coaxing before it eventually fires?

Thanks both, I don't think either of those are the culprit though

It doesn't sound like a sticking starter motor if you know what I mean, and it doesn't even attempt to turn over so I don't think it's the fuel pump. Then after a while it will just magically start like nothing ever happened

Hi Antony.
Check the spade connection on the starter motor for corrosion and clean, re-connect, but it does sound like the starter motor contacts and plunger need changing, what mileage is your car now.

Looks likely then, I've ordered the parts, thanks guys

In the meantime, is there a way of getting it to start? Parts will be a few days

You could try tapping the starter with a piece of wood or an hammer tap not whack, while someone turns the engine over.
