Hi David.
With the engine running and all the A/C off if you just press demist what happens please.

Remember these two wire 2 speed fans are louder & faster in those two speeds than the original four wire 3 speeds fans.

Did you try the fan out first with the new silver resistor on? if not and you have changed it out, if the fan does for some reason be found to be faulty then you may have a problem with the seller because of the change over.

Suspect the gold resistor if the fan worked with the silver resistor ?

That doesn't sound right at all. According to your earlier post you bought a genuine MGR 2 speed system complete with control box for petrol engines. We're going to have to examine the loom connectors I'm afraid. You might be able to access these without removing the front bumper.

Yep, link to the supplier above. The resistor was swapped for a new one Simon and that didn't fix it. I think it's a wiring issue somewhere, possibly a worn or corroded connection. I've left it with the people who fitted the new fan for me. They did it at the same time I had the belts changed back in January. I'd been running without a fan for a few weeks before that.

It's louder than I recall the original 2-speed it replaced

That's a good point! I left it for the garage to do; they assured me it was working but I don't think it was.

It was all done last Jan (including cambelts change) and I just assumed it was fixed. The garage I use is normally very good although Big Russ had to rescue them when one of their mechanics couldn't get a replacement instrument cluster to talk to the car!

Does it run continuously or pulse on and off as you reported in post no. 9?

The two plugs that plug into the fan under the front bumper seem to me to be identical. Check that the correct plug is connected to the correct socket. You can check that the wires goning into the plug and socket are correct by looking at the wire colours.

Hi Fred.
They can not get mixed up as they would not lock together, as the guides are different.

Note the peg guides, one is central the other to the right.

Therefore will only lock together when correct.

Sorry folks; I've been away but thanks for the continuing interest. I am pleased to report the garage has fixed the problem! Firstly, the gold resistor had failed after all, but there was (allegedly) also a corroded (or possibly burned out) connection somewhere beneath the fuse box that was put right. The low speed fan now cuts in when demanding AC as it should. I haven't checked what now happens when I press demist, but I will. As you can gather from my post, it's possible that it was only the gold resistor that was at fault, but I don't think it's worth teasing that out of the mechanic when I've got it back working correctly for the first time in 5 months. And that the fan itself was not faulty.

I would concur with your suspicions David
