Default 1/2 a Laptop screen

Me laptop had 4 or 5 thin coloured lines running top to bottom of the screen untill today. The right of the screen flickered fast then went blank. Now I have the left half of the screen working fine and the right half black with the coloured lines still there.
My question is:- what is it? The graphics card or the screen itself? The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 9300 so it's knocking on a bit but it's only used for surfing, forums and Email.
Not worth spending pennies on a replacement but if it's a screen or a graphics card i'd have a go myself.
ANY help or advice WILL be greatfully recieved.

Al

Or the ribbon cable that joins the screen to the motherboard. On some models it's a straightforward job to open it up and check the clip is still in place.

You could try this:
http://lifehacker.com/5823227/save-d...ke-in-the-oven
I have done it once and it worked, laptop is still working 2 years on, stick to the temp and the time
make sure the card is dead level.
Of course this is only if it is your graphics card and not the LCD screen or Ribbon cable
Good luck.
Ken.

Brilliant idea if you like fried capacitors! The little silver SMD caps are rated at 105c at nearly 400c and not just a few seconds they will be far from happy.

I was hoping an expert would tell me one way or another what the problem is. If i start messing with the oven the the old girl would rumble me that I know how it works and expect me to start cooking things.

Does it get worse if you bend the hinges of the cover e.g opening and closing the lid, if it does I'd think the ribbon is at fault

No it doesn't get worse but when I turned it on this morning the blank part of the screen is now a blueish white colour and the vertical lines have a dark blue stripe as a back ground about 3" wide.

OK, look.
Plug the laptop into an extra monitor or TV if it has the correct socket.
If you have a picture on the added screen and it looks good, then you can discount your graphics card.
if the picture resembles what you were seeing on the laptop then it`s the graphics card at fault.
You can buy new laptop screens but depending how old and whether it a popular brand Etc Etc you find one easy.
If it`s less than a year old then take it back to the store.
summing it all up.....lines on screen is usually the screen or ribbon cable at fault.
What make/model is it? how old is it?
Ken.
