Default Rear Wheel Bearing Gone ??

Hello All,

I have noticed for a while an odd noise from rear of vehicle (I think).

On arrival at home to-night, felt rear hubs, n/s/r was distinctly warmer than o/s/r.
I also grabbed top of both rear wheels(wheels on ground, not the correct way to check for bearing wear I know) No movement on o/s/r , however ther is slight movement on n/s/r with a distinct click/clunk.

Methinks new n/s/r wheel bearing required ??

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Kevin9885

Sounds like the bearing's had it. The standard and easiest fix is fit a new hub complete. Often found on eBay.

Here's some: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=r...+hub&_osacat=0

I replaced the rear nearside hub two weeks ago when it started to become very noisy. Interestingly the thumping sound coming from the rear (sounding like the baffles inside a silencer rattling around) that I had been unable to locate for the last six months also disappeared.

The wheel bearings on these cars are not taper rollers like in many other makes, but pre-set non-adjustable units. If the bearings are noisy, the best fix is to replace them. Tightening up a noisy hub will not compensate for the wear, it will simply overload the inner race.

Very few cars have taper rollers these days AFAIK.

The torque on the hub is very high anyway (210Nm) so you'll struggle to overtighten it! It is also very unlikely to have come loose as it is a staked nut.

Other cars do use taper rollers as you say and you can take a bit of slack out, but these ar few and far between.

XXXXXXXXXXX

I have a "thumping" sound from seemingly the rear, like you have looked at everything including bearings which seem fine - is changing bearings the answer???. Also, whilst investigating found o/s rear spring broken at base, rust debris etc indicates happened months ago, could this be the problem???.
