As I said, I can understand breaking a rotten car or one with a blown engine for good parts and trim etc. However there was a 70K mile MGZT breaking on the Bay of Flea yesterday - still with an MOT.

All just seems odd behaviour if you could get say £2,000 - £2,500 for the whole car.

I think a lot also depends on the desirability of the model.

A diesel automatic (considered the best combo) will be lots more desirable to buyers than a manual 1.8 or V6 petrol.

You are thinking as an enthusiast, especially with that price.

Market value dictates the price unfortunately. Currently as I see it, our cars are starting to exit the 'regular market' and entering into the 'enthusiasts market', but it is still too soon.

The generation of kids of 'my dad had one of those' hasn't reached the age where they have disposable income to buy and maintain one, is when they will stop being scrapped. Look at mk4 and 5 escorts, and how their prices have started to climb.

Our cars have another 5 or 10 years to go at least for that. Then by that stage internal combustion engines will be on shaky ground, and people will be nervous about buying one, as the fuel and usage may be taxed harshly. Hopefully though, electric conversion will be a realistic proposition by then. Once that happens, cars from.the last 20 years will be desirable, but ours may never get outside of the niche enthusiasts' market.

Whilst an sd1 is relatively desirable, a Mercedes from.the same.era is more desired, because of the perceived quality, even though more existed, and remain. Similarly a 1985 Sierra or escort will command a higher price than a rover sd3, because of that perceived quality (perceived ) , as well as a larger market (more Sierra and escorts were sold, so there are more kids dads had them). Which brings it back to the market or rather the size of the market. Along with less desirability, due to perceived quality, smaller market means a parted car can be sold to the 30 people who have that car for at least as much as its whole or the seller can wait for that 1 person who doesnt yet have one, but wants one, and is willing to find another broken car to scavenge parts from, because there are no dealers or dmgrses (?) Around to support them.

It is daft. I don't think it takes much to make money back stripping a car when it's perceived to be worth only a few £100 as an MOT failure.

People breaking a car on their drive seldom in the value of their time pulling bits off the car.

Yes I think this is case, certainly with the 1.8. The V6 is still hallowed by the enthusiasts for its smooth manners with the diesel more appealing generally for its reliability and economy. The 1.8 has few admirers sadly.

Just wait another 10 years and watch for the MGR 75/ZT only banger races....if they're not doing it already.

The Best Banger Meet Ever????? To be honest I've not only seen but also raced in far better banger races than that.

The beauty of Granadas were that they were strong and apart from the usual work, only needed two plates fitted to the front suspension and they were good to go.

Jags needed a fair bit of suspension plating and, given enough punishment, used to bend in half:

P4s and P5s were good if a tad fragile on the front end if local regs prevented dizzy and steering box guards. Westminsters, if you could get hold of them were the creme de la creme.

Could a 75 hold a candle to any of them on the track? Well I don't think so, but then again what else is there that could these days?
