I went out and took a few insect shots today. I got two unusual ones - I have no other pics of this butterfly although I don't think it is rare. I also got a grasshopper -certainly not rare but I have few pics of one.

So I got the pic of a Silver-washed Fritillary

At first I thought it was a comma which I have photographed before like this one.

But it did not look quite right. So I googled and decided it must be a Silver-washed Fritillary. I went out later and got another pic and now you can see why it has it's name

I also got a grasshopper.

Awesome Paul!

I managed to grab a picture of a similar looking butterfly in my garden last weekend. Similar colours, but the markings aren't exactly the same.

Clean and sharp photos Paul, thank you for posting. How do manage to prevent camera shake?

Just sold my Nikon D5000 kit to a Nikon enthusiast. This will help with the purchase of a mirrorless camera.

Good news on the your camera Phil.

The sharpness is in most part down to using flash and having the camera at the correct settings. It is the short duration of the flash that captures most of the image. So maybe 1/5000 sec or faster.
Also with my camera the auto focus is very fast and accurate, this helps the sharpness. On my 2010 Pentax 12mp DSLR I had to use manual focus and my eyesight both of which are not so reliable

I went for a wander this morning before the rains come. I took a few shots of the Common. I really like the combination of the green trees and bracken with the heather and an interesting sky. Oh and the odd silver birch trunk helps.

I went out today to watch family at a horse event and I took a snap of the car.

I struggled a bit with my 55-210 lens as it is only f 6.3 at the 210mm end.
I would love an f2.8.

Amazing sky scene Paul.

Do you shoot in RAW and edit your photos after?

Specifically relating to insect photography, I edit all of my RAW images but your insects look a lot better than mine.
Sometimes I think even my best images look a bit fake and almost cartoon like. (I only post my best efforts.)

Yes 99.99% shoot in RAW I then select a few I like and process them. I delete some that are not so good and many stay on hard drive unprocessed.

Some days I go back through the old ones and look through the ones I left unprocessed to see if I missed a good un.

Thanks Paul.
I do that too, go over the unedited ones just in case.
Your images look so much more life like than mine.
I'm not sure if it's just the fact I have an 18mp camera as opposed to your 24mp, or I'm doing something wrong when editing!
