Horrendous clanking under bonnet
Currently in East London 250 miles from home in West Wales, car (02 Connie CDT auto SE) started normally but then I thought a pneumatic drill had started up nearby. This clunking/clattering disappears as the engine is revved but reappears at tickover. Opened bonnet and noise seems to be coming from low down on front left. Drove the car round the block and it is driving normally apart from the noise at tickover.
I am wondering if it is crankshaft pulley bearing? Anyone know of trustworthy garage capable of fitting a replacement in E2 area? Thanks. |

I would agree crankshaft pulley from your description.
No bearing as such but the pulley 'separates'. Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone in your area but I'm sure a member will be along shortly that may know of someone. |

From what I've read, it sounds as though it could be the crankshaft pulley on the way out. It has a rubber vibration damper built in that deteriorates and produces symptoms similar to those you are describing. The part is available from Land Rover dealers (the same as the TD4 engine) at a lower price than the Rover part and could be fitted by any competent mechanic. The part number is LHG 100750; it will have an "L" at the end if it is a Land Rover part. There are numerous warning on the forum about cheap pulleys, but most have found the Corteco part to be good quality.

Yes it sounds just like all of those - a machine gun clattering when at low revs. Because I need to get back to Wales tomorrow I think I will get Green Flag to attend and diagnose with a view to traillering me home - at least I know my local mechanic will be able to fit the replacement part. Anyone got any views on the "new" BGA crank pulley?

Just for comparison, this is the sound of a worn water pump:

No issues to report so far, nice and quiet. I've also sold around 12-15 to members on here, so hopefully some will be along with their experiences too. BGA Crank Pulley - 75/ZT CDTi
