Default Mismatch on MAF plug

Hello, new member with first post. ( Puzzle ) On recently purchased 75 tourer diesel found plug not inserted into socket on MAF senser. It could never ever have fitted the senser on the inlet manifold, shape all wrong. on removing plastic insert up inside plug it will fit senser but not lock into place. Suspect senser has been changed at some time for the wrong item say off a petrol engine car but does not look as though it has ever been removed. Any suggestions, I think I should order a new diesel MAF senser against the cars chassis number but where from to save a bit of cash. All help appreciated, Dave.

Hi Dave, & welcome.

It sounds like you have an odd problem indeed.

If you are a BOSCH fan boy and love having to clean a non serviceable MAF sensor every 2-3k miles then by all means pay £150+ for a new MGR unit.

Alternatively, as all diesels are the same, you can speak to Rover Ron (you might see his advert at the top of this page). He can supply you with a Pierburgh unit for about £58 which will outlast the Bosch one. However, it needs to have its signal amplified and Ron makes and sells these units too. I think the whole thing can be had for about £80 or there abouts.

Drop him an email and he'll gladly sort you out.

Default mismatch on MAF plug

Thanks for the reply, I have the ECU away at the ECU Doctors at the present time as got very wet with the recent rains we had. ( blocked drain trouble)Will try and match everything up when it returns. Will these engines run without the MAF being connected, I ask because this one as far as I can see never ever was plugged in. Dave.

Dave it will run fine, in the winter perhaps better than fine! but in warmer weather the car might smoke a bit due to over fuelling that's all

Default mismatch on MAF plug

Thanks for the reply Keith, will let you know when I finally get it running, as I said before plug does fit but I have had to take a plastic insert out of the plug to do so, I will try it with and without connecting it. Thanks Dave.

Default mismatch on MAF plug

As promised update on above topic. Now have the car running with a reconditioned ECU ( expensive or what?) Plugged in MAF and engine will not pick up revs beyond tickover, disconnected engine runs fine. Now having to make decision to replace MAF as it should have one ( more money) or leave as it is. With this is mind as I mentioned before how did the currently fitted MAF get onto the engine in the first place as clearly it has never ever been capable of being connected to the plug which definately is original. Any ideas please.

"well, what were the 'intentions' of the last owner" is the first thing that springs to mind...
