It does. Widescreen TV modules work fine with 4:3 screens.

So these hybrid tuners are now as useless as the standard analog tuners we had from factory. What you may want (and which I have) is another TV tuner solution that actually uses original BMW video modules but rebuilt with new TV-Tuner capabilities. They are plug'n'play as well and would operate either from the screen controls or from a supplied infrared remote.
