Default Wheel arch trim self tappers & clips ?

Something so simple but giving me a real headache. . .

I need new screws and clips for

Rimmers are charging 72 pence each for the screws and don't sell the replacement clips. (see https://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID001808) (mine are rusted solid and I need access to fit a new flexi air pipe to replace mine which has disintegrated).

I'm getting a headache on ebay, so many different shapes and sizes available I'm just getting confused. Some nice ones here but what size do I need http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Speed-Fast...p/322352260488

If someone can point me to some suitable screws and clips I'd be very grateful. (sadly DMGRS doesn't sell them).

Thanks, Ali.

Any spire nuts with suitable self tappers will do, just get ones similar to what you have

Try Xpart parts finder http://www.mgroverpartfinder.com/ or alterantively try A E Wilcox at Wickwar near Bristol they seem to normally have stock of lots of parts http://www.aewilcox.co.uk/

I've swapped all my bumper's and liners' threaded fasteners for stainless steel alternatives from eBay. They're a fraction of Rimmer's price and will last ten times longer. For the front lower edge, including the 'duct' panel you show, I use 4mm x 20mm self-tapping screws with a Pozidrive head. No doubt you can get other style drives, but these don't have to be particularly tight.
Something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4mm-x-20mm...EAAOSwnDZUJtl~

The flat metal bit the takes the self tappers are called spire clips. Again, eBay is the place to go and stainless is the type to get. Sizes selected according to the screws used. Stainless spire clips: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_od...clips&_sacat=0

The OEM plastic 'rivets' that hold the rear faces of the liners to the chassis are virtually single use type, which I swapped out for easy demountable 'push rivets'. These are a 2-part fastener with a central 'pin'. This is pushed in flush after the main body is fitted into the panel/chassis. This locks it solid, but a further push on the pin using a thin drift causes it to release again so you can pull it out unscathed. Here's a few: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_fr...ivets&_sacat=0

That is brilliant, thank you! I didn't know they were called 'spire clips'. Yes, Stainless Steel ones would be best. Also, thanks for the link for the 2-part fastener rivets, I need some of those! But the size issue raises its head again. 6 mm or 8 mm? Or larger?

Oh, include some suitable stainless penny washers to go with the self-tappers.

You can also get stainless flanged hex-headed screws (M6 x 12) and penny washers to go along the upper edge of the bumper. Like these:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M6-6mm-A2-...b2ZpOsvLDOrG5g

Makes a nice looking job. Bumper removal becomes a 10 -15 minute job when the screws never seize.

Can't remember off hand. Just pull one of the old ones out and measure the hole in the liner or test hole size in chassis using a drill shaft. Find the best fit. I'd say they're closer to 6mm than 8mm, but check.

This is getting ridiculous. Is 4mm the same as M4? And why is one seller saying No8 screws are 4.2mm? I can get 4mm screws (thanks for the link, but I don't need 100!) the washers and spire clips are listed as 'M4'.

Why is something that should be so flippin easy so difficult ? Sadly we don't have a B&Q around here. If I could see them on the shelf I'd know if they were the right size.

Oh and the plastic wheel arch rivet holes are 7mm (tested with a drill bit, thanks!) , so I guess I'll buy some 7mm ones

I use size 10g (4.8mm) A2 stainless self tapping pozi pan screws. Length 3/4". In addition I fit large 20mm or 15mm x 5mm stainless washers.

It's due to the culture clash in mesurement. Some are metric(European), some Imperial (British), some American.

Well M4 is a 4mm metric thread (outside diameter). A 4mm diameter wood screw or self tapper is more likely to be sized using a 'gauge' measurement. I believe 'gauge' originated in the wire industry.

Quote:

He's giving the shank or thread diameter in millimetres. Most people understand what a 4.8mm diameter screw would look like, but baffled by a No8.

That's just an example. Try a wider search. Not everybody sells in 100s. But at a couple of pounds, you can chuck the rest away. Don't expect to get eight or ten screws at the pro-rata rate.

Spire clips come in both threaded (for conventional screws/bolts) and specifically for self-tappers. The description should explain.

If everything were easy, there'd be no need for garages.

Can't help you there.

I'd say you're right.
