Default ChipsAway

After spending the last 7 years telling everybody that, no matter what their other issues, 75’s don’t seem to rust… I’ve just found some stone chips all round the rear o/s arch. They’re small, and look pretty superficial at the moment, but are starting to rust.

All the local body shops seem to want to spray the entire car, judging by the ridiculous prices I’ve been quoted. Anybody had any experience of ChipsAway?

Some are great some are awful. They are franchised hence you take a chance. You need reviews for the one for your area or another suitable local independent.

Guy by me does similar - pricey but no worse than chips away with good results. The actual methodology is fine.

As said really it is all down to the individual operating the franchise. I have had some excellent work done but then I once had the bumper corner sprayed, 9 months in it started to orange peel so ended up taking the car to a paint shop.

Well, ChipsAway were worse than useless. He looked at the tiny area of rust (like a few millimetres) , sucked through his teeth, and said nah, can’t touch it mate, that’s started to bubble. It might be all the way through, and we don’t do that.

After he’d gone, I touched the couple of little bubbles (each well less than a millimetre in diameter) with sandpaper and exposed bare metal. I’ve touched it up with smooth Hammerite for now to stop it getting worse – too many things making demands on my pocket at the moment, and the local body shop wants £3-400.

The entire area s about the size of your fingernail. The little one.

I found a bubble on the front d/side wheelarch, near to where it joins the bumper, popped it & sure enough, about 1/2" of paint came away, leaving metal on show Felt underneath & about 2" of rusty metal came away around the folded part inside. So I wire brushed all of the inner part which had rusted, treated it with Deox Gel, then Hammerite Waxoyl, followed by Dynax all around & under the arch liner. Painted over the front visible part & hopefully, caught it in time. That's 2 sections I've found up to now, the other at the base of the d/side rear jacking pad, again, inside the arch liner, so check under the plastic bits folks

Depending on your budget I would shop around. I have a local guy to me who seems to be great value even of you need a lot of work.

The big boys have a lot more overheads so probably best to find somebody small and offer cash.

Something to remember with rust it is often 3 times as big as it looks on the surface.

Oh, I have – extensively. And they’re all rip-off merchants. We had a wonderful back-room sort of guy round here who used to do everybody’s bodywork for about a third of the price of everybody else, but he was killed in the TT a few years ago.

And yeah, I know how rust can go, but this has only been there about a month, and is superficial…

I don't know anybody who ever called out chipsaway or even a paintless dent remover and got told, ''yeah, no problem, will get that fixed right now''

I have literally no idea how they ever make any money because their ads really seem to write cheques their talents can't cover.

A friend of mine had a scratch on the drivers door on her Suzuki Swift, took the car to Chip Away, made a terrible job as they skimped on the lacquer and the door is dull compared to the rest of the body. When it comes to her selling her car, this will soon be noticed and the price offered to her would be low.
