Post Rover Tow Bar

Hello Campers,

I've posted this in the general forum but thought I'd post here also as it is more subject specific.

My partner and I are hoping to purchase a trailer tent, however at the moment we haven't got a tow bar in which to tow it.

Had a look under my 75 and discovered I have two electric plugs for trailer electrics, and a metal plate that looks like it would house the neck and ball with a Rover sticker on it - photo below.

Just wondering if anyone had this same set-up and can advise as to which part I am missing. Would ideally like to keep the existing set up replacing the necessary parts instead of installing a brand new complete tow bar on the back.

Any advice gratefully received.

Hi - I've got the same set up - but when I purchased the car I was lucky enough to find the tow ball section in with the spare wheel. It was a factory fitted option - removable swan neck tow ball. Comes with a locking mechanism to which you have a key. Fitted mine and left it on as its a bit of a fiddle to take it off. If it will help I can take a picture of it fitted.

Cheers

Hi Saltash,

Thanks for the reply - I was beginning to give up hope. If you could take a photo that would be great, just so I can see which bits I actually need. It would be a real shame to remove an OEM part to replace it with another, so hopefully I will be able to source the parts I need.

Thanks again.

Hi - Many Apologies - I've been away from computer for a day or so and only just seen your reply - I've dashed out in the dark and took some photos - hope they give you some idea..

The missing part is the swan neck and inserts into the socket so that a cross peg fits into the half round cut outs - there's some clever mechanism that locks it into place with a key - there's a number on the swan neck - don't know if its a part number...36 2889. I'm away tomorrow but if you need any more info let me know... If you're really stuck I'll try and get it off and take some more pics!

Cheers

Hello again Saltash,

Thanks so much for this - makes things a lot clearer as to what I now need. Looks like it's simply the swan neck and cross peg. Will have to keep an eye on the internet for one. If no such luck you never know, I may have a very lucky scrap yard find. Either way, as mentioned before, would like to keep it as genuine as possible and it seems a shame to scrap the whole set up just because of one missing component.

Thanks again - has helped a lot.

Best Wishes.

It may be worth putting a request on part finder!

Not suggesting it is, but might the swan neck part be a standard item able to fit multiple models? Maybe all that varies is the car specific bracket part mounted on the car.

It may have Rover markings, but Rover didn't make towbars - it will be from one of the big names in towbars. Find out who made them for Rover and back track from there.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.
