A What should I do Water Pump Question
OK, I own a 2003, Connoisseur V6 Blue, 88,000 miles, who currently has a water pump leak. I have been quoted £1,200 to fix this, do the belts etc etc. So I am sitting here wondering what to do. I no longer require the car as I have replaced her, do I try and sell her as she is with this fault and maybe someone out there wants to fix themselves and enjoy her for years to come? Is it worth at all paying to fix her with any resale value in her at present?
It seems sad to just not do anything, as I know the numbers are dwindling of this lovely car. What do folk think?? |

Get 2 more quotes That is high !
Also , are you sure it is the water pump that leaks ; if the thermostat is leaking it will accumulate in the V of the engine and run out of a drain hole just below the water pump , making it appear to be the pump

You should be able to get the price around £500 -£600 using genuine parts.

Its a tough question,
I recently had the water pump fail on me and really had to ask myself is it worth it as my quote was somewhat higher than yours, but as I was at the mercy of the only mechanic around in a remote French village Repatriation was out of the question for the RAC. So with only 75,000 on clock I bit the bullet and the guy did a great job and now know i'll get another 75,000 out of it. So for me it was worth it as its my only car. Could I have scrapped it and bought another for less? Yes but then what problems would I inherit with the unknown? As I would then have had to drive that back to southern France. Wasn't worth the risk. I know the rest of my 75 is sound so I shall continue to enjoy it. Don't envy your dilemma. |

You may also want to try Carserve . They're based in Chobham, so not too far from you. The owner, Peter Wayte, is MG Rover trained, and worked for the Trident Garage in Ottershaw for a number of years when they were MG Rover dealers. I haven't had any dealings with him myself, so can't comment from that front, but I have heard good feedback from others in the MG Rover community. Failing that, there is also the option of using mobile mechanics who will come to you. As well as the one previously mentioned, my brother has used Russell from MGRover Solutions and has always been pleased with his work. £560 for belts and waterpump. Hope this helps, Cliff
