12 May 2004: 33523 75's from VIN: RJ133300********* to RJ247257*********
Description: Possible damage and deflation of tyre due to road spring
Defect: There is a possibility that if a front road spring failed at the lower end, it could contact and damage the tyre.
Action: Recall affected vehicles and fit an additional lower road spring retention fixture which will protect the tyre in the event of a spring failure
So all cars up to VIN 247257 have this potentially lethal problem - unless they have been fixed.

My 75 has this rework on it. An early car (late Cowley).

My Audi A3 (Am I allowed to mention it) had a broken spring, but at the top so nowhere near the tyre. Six years old, 97k miles.

While fixing it a neighbour told me the same thing had happened on his Corsa inside the warramty period.

A friends Citroen had a broken spring and ended up with the bumper on the floor.

Does anyone have a photo of the modification so we can all crawl underneath and check? I seem to remember discussing this with the Mg dealership at Northwich...does anyone have a part number?

Keith, glad you are safe matey....I imagine youre life flashed before you?

Someone I know has a Renault Laguna on an o4 plate with about 64k miles.

Couple of weeks ago she went to the car on Saturday morning and heard groaning from the front with a smell of burning rubber when she tried to move it. Yup - drivers side front spring gone and rubbing against the tyre but tyre not punctured.

£608 at Renault dealer for fitting two new front springs and shock tops.

Its a bit worrying when this sort of thing seems to happen to pretty young cars - this particular Renault only being about 3.5 years old and at 64k miles.

Ended up lending her my 75 Saloon until Renault could fit her car in. Now that bit was really scary

Well there you go then

Mine is 207195 I wonder what this retention fixture thingy is supposed to look like? If it is anything like the lump of mecanno on my Picasso I don't have one.

Anyway
I have just jacked the car up, removed my destroyed wheel, got out the angle grinder and chopped off the projecting spring fitted my spare and driven the car up on my ramp

Next job was to inspect the failure
The black protective coating has degraded in the area of the failure.
Rust rust has started to attack what was probably initially a minor defect in the spring then over an unknown period of time this defect had turned into a crack and finally bang, rust is visible through about a third of the break indicating the failure was not instantaneous.

Once I had the car ready to work on I lifted the seat squab to get the spring codes, now this I don't really understand

Front RH is code PL
Front LH is code JL

part number is REB101430

for all these :-

Spring-road front coil - Green/Blue, PG (Green/Blue), JG (Green/Blue), PL (Green/Blue), JL (Green/Blue)

so how does that work then? or do they suffix the part number when ordering e.g.

REB101430/PL and REB101430/JL?

I will order the parts tomorrow and maybe I will have them for Saturday, I hope so as I am working in London all next week which means I will have to take the Picasso and that means Karen gets to play with my BMW

No not really, driving my Landrover is really scary!
Which btw I have just sold on Ebay for considerably more than I paid for it like by a factor of 4

Oh and I got a pay rise yesterday and I have just received a quote for some building work here from a local builder for half the price I was expecting so on that basis something just had to go wrong I suppose!
