I for one would be happy for Renault to manufacture cars at Washington. There are no UK car manufacturer to step in so if this happens it will be a good solution. That’s not to say I’m a fan of Renault, I’m not, similarly with Nissan products, for me it’s all about manufacturing jobs. Our French friends may yet come and support us, don’t mention the ‘monkey hangers’ not overly far from Washington.

When this thread was first posted I had heard that the Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi collaboration may be behind it. In these changing times car manufacturers are contracting and it makes some sense to look at your markets. Nissan and Renault are in competition for the same demographic customers.

The chassis and engines between the two are becoming more and more unified so it seems commercial sense to reduce competition between them and concentrate on their stronger markets, Nissan the far east and USA, Renault Europe. Trading only in these areas has the potential to maximise each manufacturers profits by eliminating one major competitor. After reading earlier this week that Renault may manufacture in Sunderland I think this scenario may be starting to play out.

Another reason may be Brexit, tariffs are becoming more likely but at the same time the UK is a very important market to trade in. I have heard that some European manufacturers are keen to keep manufacturing in the UK for the UK markets mainly and I can see this a big motivator to keep Renault selling in the UK.

Yikes! Nissan just closed their Barcelona car plant with the loss of 3000 jobs.

And they have just announced that Sunderland is safe and very much a part of the future plans to manufacture mainstream cars there for Europe including the EV range. They also plan to reduce the world wide model range of Nissan cars concentrating on SUVs EVs and sports cars, and are still considering manufacturing Renault vehicles at the site.
