Default A lot of gas at St John’s College Oxford

Students demanded that the College disinvest its endowment fund from all fossil fuel investments. (Which make up less than 2% of its total portfolio) Lots of protests etc.

The Bursar wrote to them saying that disinvesting immediately was not possible for genuine reasons but what he could do was turn off the gas central heating throughout the College.

That would be dangerous bleated the students!

Yes - said the Bursar - but it is something you can do that will effect YOU - rather than demand others do something whilst you carry on regardless.....

Clever man that Bursar.

If only they did study history! They might learn something and avoid the mistakes of the past. They do degrees in politics, economics and media and learn absolutely nothing about the real world. Starting with the fact their privileged lifestyles ride on a world powered by fossil fuels!

Bursars are not always the best of people Clive ... Jesus College springs to mind with a name which I won't mention. He got lucky from the day that he in my opinion, and that of many others, evaded the boot at the careers door and managed to con Betty into giving him a commission.

They also do degrees in Metallurgy and Particle Physics as studied by my brother and daughter, both from unprivileged backgrounds and state schools. Some get there through hard work. Lets not tar them all with the same brush please
