Hi Pete, you might be interested. I have been paying into AXAPPP International since 2008. This year they changed the international name to Global and my premium was increased by £834 to £5,830 comprehensive. It’s a lot to pay and Jessica is also with AXA Global. We are both over 60 and the premiums go up according to the age band. I have dropped from comprehensive to standard cover with a £500 excess. Doing that reduced my premium by £2,300 and I have had my money's worth from them over the years. The price of living in Africa, is there is no NHS.

As you have discovered, there are advantages to going private. Yesterday I was chatting to someone who works in private health who arranges operations and she was telling me how private health is busier now than it’s ever been. More people in the UK are having to go private and there is definitely an overspill from the NHS. At my age it’s getting expensive and I have to make a lot of sacrifices to be able to pay the premiums. If I didn’t have to fork out for it, I could afford to get a new car or go on a cruise. I am not complaining, it is what it is.

Hi Pete, thank you for that, they paid for me to have a sleep study whilst I was in hospital in May for the Shingles. Jessica asked the docs if anything could be done for my snoring. Even though they paid for the study, they refused to pay for a device to stop the snoring. On another occasion, I asked for another surgeon to assist in my bypass. That was also refused, but they did pay for the bypass. Sorry to hear about your costs and fees.

Have you a date for the MRI? When you have the scan and you are able discuss the results and treatment with the specialist, you will know if you are staying with the NHS or not. Ask if there are other treatments available, not available to NHS patients. If you are offered surgery and you don’t have long to wait, stick with the NHS. If it’s a long wait, you can ask for a set fee package for private self-pay. What increases the costs is the length of stay in hospital as a private patient. Medication can also be expensive as the tablets are brand names and not generic. When you have finished going private, you can go back to the NHS for follow up etc although you could check if that’s included in the package. Does that make sense?

I'm still waiting for the MRI appointment letter to come through, only been one week so far. I'm hoping to stay as a NHS patient, I really don't fancy paying the incredibly high prices that come with private treatment. I don't have healthcare insurance, I've never even thought about insurance TBH...

The NHS eventually came good with regards to my TN head and facial pain, but I suffered years and years of being pushed away...

Its terrible service really when you think about it, I think the NHS system only works when you are literally at deaths door, as was my father a few years ago. This is where I actually saw the NHS work as it was designed to do, but the system soon fails again when the patient gets released home.

I can see why so many people do go private, it seems all these surgeons and specialist's work mostly in the private sector, and give little time to their NHS work. Take my appointment that I had last week, it was at a private hospital, but I was seen as a NHS patient... If I ever get this MRI Phil, I will be amazed...

I have just had my third MRI, for three different reasons, brain, prostate, then latest kidneys. The appointments appear in around a month from request - at standard speed. My second, for my prostate came through as 'an urgent' in 7 days and they wanted to do it on a Sunday, but I couldn't make it, so rearranged for the Monday out of hours, then declared 'no problem'.

I haven't really used the medical services before, but I must say I am very impressed with the NHS's care of me generally.

The only time I have really been less than impressed, was when I was rushed in with massive blood loss in the early hours, in shock, left on a trolley, cold not offered a blanket and over-heating unable to get a fan, then the terrible food.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

The NHS, despite its stretched resources and underfunding, is still the best in the world when compared to 3rd world countries. In May this year in Kenya, no bed was available at a private hospital I had been admitted into. The hospital has 2 tiers of service: a public ward and a private wing with private rooms en-suite, a/c, it’s own nurses and great food, Sat TV and mosquito nets for the bed, telephone and el-safe.

The first night, I was admitted into the public ward at the hospital in Nairobi. The ward had no rooms, it was hot 30c + and the flies were everywhere. The patient in the bed opposite had sex on his bed with one of the nurses, no shame or discretion. I had no locker/cupboard by my bed to put my things in, the toilets and showers were communal. I was relieved when I was transferred into the private wing, which charges $1000 USD per night for the room. They won’t discharge or release until the bed/care has been paid for. During the week, I had 3 brain scans, CT without contrast and 2 MRI of the brain and eye sockets with contrast. How did you get on with your scans? ...... the results? Are you any better?
