Default I Think I've Wounded My Car......

So I had the thermostat mod fitted to Tarquin today at the NANO meet (Big thanks to whoever did it for me ) and for the first time since I had the car the temp gauge was reading 9 o'clock. It never got any hotter than that and everything looked good.

BUT THEN......

Halfway back home I got caught in a traffic jam. All was fine for a couple of minutes, when suddenly the temp gauge went mad and shot all the way up into the red zone. Car went into limp mode and temp went down again once we started moving, but it always hovered at the very top end of the gauge. After gingerly getting home and letting it cool down I check the coolant level and it was empty. It was only after I tried to refill the tank I realised why it was empty, as it was coming out just as fast as I was putting it in.

Immediate thought was that I'd ran over some debris which was then kicked up and punctured the radiator, but after talking to dad I can't rule out a failed bottom hose. Are either a possibility, or have I gone and broke my car?

I can only recount my similar experience. My 1.8 at just over 95k ...empty header tank, tried refilling, straight out, onto the floor, ...water pump failure.

You didn't mention what engine you have in your car.

As with anything... Check the last thing that was changed if everything was ok beforehand.

Are you sure you had the water level correct following the stat fitment?

Check water level when cold, check for any signs of leaks.

I wish I knew. I couldn't see anything from the top of the engine from where I was standing, and the stat mod was still bone dry too. All I know is I could hear the water pouring out from somewhere and it was leaving a nasty wet patch on the road.

On a side note - the fan is also working fine, as it was trying like crazy to cool it down.

It is all speculation until you get a look at it, but I would be looking at the work carried out (I am not criticising or blaming). I am wondering if the new stat is faulty and not opening? Build up of pressure has caused a hose to pop off/loose? Or one of the clips failing and allowing the coolant to leak by?

Where is the coolant/noise coming from and landing in relation to the car? As an example, if there is no undertray, and the coolant was landing on the ground roughly beside the driver's side wheel, it will suggest the original thermostat housing/waterpump area. From below the passenger side wheel would suggest pipework relating to the FBH (location). You get the idea.

David,

In your profile, where it says: "Rover 75 Saloon", please can you delete "Saloon" and insert the engine type which you've helpfully given above? This will ensure that technical advice given is prompt and accurate. Many thanks.

Simon

Do those engines have core plugs, just a though. I reckon Ive exhausted the "defective coolant cap" issue. Best of luck I feel for you, been there, etcetc. Chris S.

Problem solved.

The replacement pipe had slipped it's jubilee clip and come loose. Refitted the pipe, re-tightened the clip and ran the engine up to temperature (after refilling the coolant) and all was well.

On a side note, i did have to keep tightening the coolant cap as the engine warmed up? Once it reached the correct temperature it no longer worked loose.
