Default error code po507

My CDTi 2003 has lost some acceleration, almost has the same feel of a clutch slipping. rev counter way up but no corresponding surge. Local mechanic put his computer on it and it came up with po507 - Auto box Transmission range sensor fault. Does this seem reasonable and can one purchase and have fitted a new sensor to hopefully solve the problem ? No other known faults.
