Number Plates costing more than car
I saw a BMW 1 series with the number plate "8K" in Cannock today. I couldn't believe my eyes! It was a bog standard 1 series, not an M sport, just a 116. I'm no expert of number plate values, but this must cost thousands!!!
Got me thinking any members on here that have a number plate worth more than the car? |

I just paid £45 (+£90 govt fee) yesterday for a plate with my first & middle name initials and year and month on a suffix 'G' plate..... Think it maybe less than value of my car... Haha

I bought my personalised plate about 20 years ago, it was £500 including fees - similar series plates now go for about £2,500

I have gone better. I call the wife KY05.
The plate cost £15 including postage. Edit due to finger trouble - it should have been KY05 as opposed to KW05 as originally typed. Last edited by MSS; 16th May 2017 at 20:34.. |

I was lucky with mine, the owner was emigrating to Australia and he either sold it or lost it. Luckily nobody else wanted it so I got it for £25 plus the cost of putting it on my car. I have since been offered £1k for it.
I used to work for a guy who had a set of plates with consecutive numbers with his initials and no letters on the end, he had apparently given DVLA £30k for the set. There is an old Volvo parked up a few miles from me that has not been on the road for 15 years or more and it has a great plate on it ( two letters and two numbers). No chance unless some unscrupulous MOT tester wants to chance it. I wonder how many great plates get lost this way? |

If it's not on SORN - which I think may have started less than 15 years ago then the number may already be lost. My personalized plate was on a Saab I've had on SORN for the last 3 years, transferred it over to the 75, as after 5 years on SORN you can't transfer it without the vehicle having an MOT and current road tax. |

I have 4 SOV on an early X Type Jaguar - after Brexit I was offered silly money, but still turned it down. I am a Monarchist! Also own J45 UAR and J47 UAR, both on elderly Jags. The latter car (an XJ8) was given to me by the owner when I bought the plate! All good investments!
On our cars I have SE04 ROV and M6 RDV which are both probably worth more than the cars!!! Also have R25 VER on retention. |
