Snow chains
Does anyone here in the UK use snow chains? I'm in the south and I don't recall ever not being able to get anywhere due to snow but we don't get it as bad as the North. Anyone in the North use snow chains?

Back in 1963, due to deep snow, I spent weeks going out in a land Rover with massive chains on all four wheels, to all intents and purposes, there were no roads, so you could go where you liked, we drove around all over the place, mainly between Poole, Wimborne, Blandford, and Wool areas, the snow was so hard I could walk about on it in most places, but if you fell through, it was up over your waist in some area, and very hard to get back out of..... The snow fell on new years eve, I was playing a gig in Oakdale, and had to leave my car and walk the 3 miles home to Hamworthy, it was weeks before I got my car back... There was still some snow on the ground in early March. ... Last edited by James.uk; 17th January 2015 at 16:53.. |

I just have winter snow tyres, as snow chains have to be removed as soon as you're back on tarmac......

Used mine twice on the Tourer. Both very short distances.
One was on my inclined drive, while reversing my trailer into the garage with a lathe on it. It was snowing and the machine was getting wet, the wheels were spinning and going nowhere. Fitted the chains and it went up with no problem. For emergency use they are well worth keeping in the boot I suppose. (even in Wiltshire )

I do like the idea of chains, but I've never needed them yet. My local Post Office is 1/2 a mile away, and the parcel depot is up a main (and well gritted and cleared) road, even in the worst of winters.
I do have a set of snow socks in the garage - the previous occupier left them here. Not checked them for size, though.

watching tv and with people stuck in the snow I wonder why people go out with no
form of security such as chains or "socks" particularly up north. macafee2 |
