Now your talking a real kickback from my Thruxton if you didn't get the piston in the right place before the compression stroke on the kick-start; and the 500 BSA Gold Star would give you a nice waker upper too (ankle breaker sometimes). The Thruxton was double jeopardy because if you gave the kick-start pedal an ever so slightly outward thrust the extra-light spring that kept the racket pawl engaged with the gearbox would compress and then you put all your total weight/right leg on just fresh air - down went your leg, hyper extension of the knee joint with the inside of your knee walloping the sharpish corner of the perforated oil tank heat guard.
Happy days but goodby very sore/swollen knee.

Don't talk about kickstart pawls! I used to have to keep a few spare, the Commando had an appetite for them.

The one thing I couldn't get my head around was the positive earth.

Of all the bikes I've had the one I wish I'd kept was a Honda CB550K3. Got it dirt cheap off a painter and decorator neighbour, he'd taken it in part payment for a job, real Arthur Daley type The reason for the bargain price was an electrical problem, turned out to be a simple fix, rebuilt the engine to sort an oil leak (broken crankcase bolt), new camchain etc, ran like a sewing machine. It had the original 4 into 4 exhausts, that's what drew me to it.

The CB550 was nice. I always wanted a CX500, but never got one.

Now you've gone off thread reservation - electric start, all you could strain was a thumb

The CX500 seemed to have a common fail point but for the life of me cannot recall what it was. London dispatch riders seemed to love them.

Ignition / charging issues, apart from that they were bulletproof and did munch the miles.

From memory early ones also suffered from pushrod wear issues as they were at an angle - sort of twisted. But many covered 35k+ miles.
