Not being on "Social Media" the hand signal meant nothing to me - it does now.

I was just the same. It was a YouTube item I clicked on due to the headline. If I had not watched the clip I would never have known. I thought it worth knowing and sharing just in case one day one of us manages to help someone.

I do wonder why such signals are not made public via the news on TV

Me too. I thought I was the only person in the world not on S. M. As for the sign, disguised as a friendly 'wave goodbye', it's just about perfect in not arousing the attention of the source of danger.

Probably because the dimwits among us would consider it amusing to flash the signal at every other person they see rendering it useless.
