Yes Boriss, the motors are the same. You'll have to retain your petrol control box though.

If you're thinking that it will be easier to transplant a second-hand diesel motor, remember that the same brush in that is likely to be worn so you may find yourself having motor failure again in relatively short time.

The advantage of repairing what you've got is:
  1. You know the motor's general condition and that the commutator is serviceable.
  2. New ECP brushes fitted to your existing motor will outlast anything else. Mine are still going strong after over 50,000 miles.

Was a bit too long for update .
Simon you saying I unlucky ? How about that, bought another second hand fan wile his out decided change brushes open him and what a surprise more worst then my original, magnet broken, rotor not at his best either .Anyway I manage make one of two that mean Fan work . Now lets get back to high pressure in the cooling system.first of all list what new.
1 thermostat new
2 water rad new fit today as well
3 fan now work as should
4 water pump as far as I know new.
5 expansion tank cap 140psi was new till this morning back old one for 200psi
Thermostat opens at 84 degrees , fan kick on at 100 degree
as I drive mainly A3 was monitoring temperature run at very easy driving 82-87 degree and heater in the car always on .Now say if I have short run then stop for 10min (engine off) and start again water will go out trough expansion cap all over engine bay . if I rev closer to 4000pm on warm engine water out same way and obvios temperature rising to sky . Now more confusing is when in cold engine next day I undo expansion cap it sound sort of like release air to it and can even push water up out ( be in mind I was trying air bleed how it should and also by vacum bleeder too). Now car start getting more worse as chuk away sometimes about 3ltr of water in one go .And distance of 20 mile now I have to do with pit stop ( ohh top up stop and cool down a bit)So where to go next.

Hi , thanks for get involve
Do you suspect head gasket? if yes they be replaced about 2000 miles ago may be less a bit .I will try do that, also I have another think (of cracked head near outlet side )then it can make sense as engine push pressure in to water , what not make sense it is why it happen after engine was rebuild

Hi Boriss,
  1. Why was the engine rebuilt?
  2. Did you do it yourself or pay someone else?

Another simple test to do is remove the coolant cap, fill the tank to the brim, remove the spark plugs, remove the fuel pump relay, then get someone to crank the engine over, while you watch to see if any water starts spitting from any cylinder then its either hgf, a cracked liner or head.
Remove the plugs from the front bank and try it before you do the rears, I've heard and had it myself that the front centre is usually the one that goes.

I hope you don't have hgf, I've had 2 cars go with it, the second had hgf due to failing O rings on the long plastic pipe to thermo and subsequent coolant loss.
