it might be worth checking you haven't got two thermostats in. Mine had one in the the early place and a PRT when I got the car.

Refit the original thermostat, bleed the system and send the 82 degree version back for a refund.

It is obvious that it is malfunctioning.

A good thought Eric but wouldn't that also affect Rob's original buff PRT? He says that the engine runs perfectly when that one is fitted:

Check the temp by driving with the obd showing the actual temp. You can leave it on while driving.

Well I’ve been doing that - that’s how I’ve managed to give you such precise figures on the temperatures!

You can actually see this clearly, if you coast down a long incline and use a gauge that shows what is going on directly.
So on cold days, the main radiator is sometimes hardly even used. The coolant circulates in the block and the heater, and never reaches the temperature required to open the thermostat and involve the radiator!.

I remember a long trip in my V6 an early winter morning with minus degrees, there was some heat in the heater, but not a lot, and I stopped and checked the radiator. Stone cold! From memory it was about 5 or 7 degrees under 0!
In our 1.8T, in winter, it was common to see the temperature gauge under normal, on winter runs on the highway. You would only get the temperature fully up, if you kept the heater off, until the temperature rose.
Yes I know what you mean there - the old one would creep down to the mid 80s on long descents on cold weather. As will this ‘82C’ one but it’s creeping down to about 92-93C at the lowest. It sure isn’t right.

As for your 1.8T that was running that cold I’d say you had a stuck thermostat there. The temperature gauge shows normal from about 65C does it not? Anything less than than is pretty chronically under cooled! I’ve driven mine in the Alps down to about -17C and although I wasn’t watching the exact temperature on the OBD the gauge would never go down below normal with the standard stat.

Thanks for your responses all. Been out again today and it’s perfect... unless you watch those numbers! I’m definitely going to give it the old hot water test. Like running a Mini again ha ha

Re. thermostat standard temps - I’m not the only one who has found 92C stats in these 1.8T engines... I believe the one I took out from the factory was stamped as such if you looked inside it. There was a discussion on Facebook about this and other said they had seen them too - someone had had one supplied from Rimmers. Anyway.

I definitely don’t have 2 thermostats - I’m only the second owner (long term) and it was totally unmolested when I got it.

That's correct for an 88 degrees standard thermostat Rob.
