I take all the remarks with a pinch of salt. The turbo on Banana is the original and so is the clutch. And we are determined to get one of Trikey's "To the Moon" sticker.

Hans Schaaper's temperature gauge that I fitted years ago has saved mine from overheating troubles, I haven't any doubt about that.

T-Cut makes a very salient observation - i would advise all 1.8t owners - get a Hans Gauge fitted ASAP - I know Hans is no longer making them but you can get them (exact same spec) from E Bay - a gent in West Yorkshire is making them amongst other bits of useful MG/75 kit.

Well now, that's all well and good and very funky looking, but I wouldn't have a clue about how to actually fit one! Probably cost me more getting that fitted than the car's worth!

Its an easy low cost job and the kit comes with pictures and instructions for those who wish to do it themselves- as was the case in years gone by with the original Hans Schaarpe gauge - which up to 4/5 years ago was fitted by many 1.8t owners

You never said there was pictures! That gives me a fighting chance!

Still can't believe the mechanic who did my turbo said that I will definitely suffer hgf at some point with my 1.8t. Asked him if it's avoidable and he just said no, don't thrash it everywhere and it'll last longer, bu it'll go. And if you put the uprated head gasket in, you have to pull the head apart, have it skimmed, have all the stuff replaced and it'll cost more than the cars worth.

These engines really don't have a good reputation, do they?

A Hans gauge will give you an audible alarm at 110 degrees and another at 115 degrees- so you know straight away that you have coolant problems/overheating engine and therefore prevent the HGF failing - as T-Cut says he has had no such HGF problems as he has one fitted.

There is also a theory that the recommended OAT coolant attacks the original MG Rover elastomer gasket causing it to fail more readily when stressed by heat- so many on here no longer use the recommended OAT coolant but just normal blue coolant - but I will leave this for others to debate

There's different kinds of coolant????

I thought there was red, and there was blue. Red was good for 3 years or something, blue was good for a year. I thought. Maybe.

I really ought to learn some of this stuff.
