I always put back the actuators with the shafts in an intermediate position and not at the ends (open or closed).
There is no way to fit them wrong if doing so.

If you get the ones from Stocktake with the built in push to test buttons you can test them as often as you want.

The VIS motors ( there are two of them) are situated in the inlet manifold left hand side as you face the car with the bonnet open.

They are easy to remove. with the car turned off ( you cannot start the car with either of them removed) you simply need to unplug the electrical plug and undo the four crosshead screws that hold them in place. the power one ( in the top of the manifold next to the servo pipe lifts straight up. it may be stuck on the gasket but as the gasket is rubber they are re-useable so don't worry.

When you lift this off you will be able to look into the hole below it and you will see a brown arm, this is connected to the butterflies in the manifold. The arm should be free in its operation side to side. any up and down movement other than flexing is wear on the manifold.

The balance Vis is on the side of the manifold just to the left of the power one, again remove the electrical connection and undo the four crosshead screws that hold it in position.
If you have traction control you will need to remove the actuator first ( this is held in place by three 10mm nuts an electrical connection underneath, then you can lift it up and out of the way without removing the traction control cable.

When you pull the balance vis to the left it may try to bring the balance flap that lives behind it out with it. If it does it will not clear the rear cam cover. Simply separate with a screwdriver down the back of the motor.

Once the motor is out you will see the balance flap. it fits in to a guide in the manifold. Satisfy yourself that you are happy with how it pulls put and refits ito tne manifold. Once you are happy with this slide the flap out. You need to check the operation of the flap that it is free through 90 degees if not you need to clean all the crud from it, possibly even shaving the edges of the flap.
The shaft on the end of the flap is oblong not square so you cannot put the flap back in the wrong way, whichever way it goes back in to the manifold on the guide is correct. The correct rest position for the balance flap is open and the correct rest position for the power arm is fully over to the drivers side ( English cars)

Here is the wiring diagram to make a tester

Here is the original how to

Hope that helps, let me know
