Default Rover 75 Tourer - 2.0 Diesel

Help !!!!

My 6 year-old beauty is playing up with me:

Symptoms:

The car "shakes" at 130kms on the motorway (I can't gather whether the problem comes from the wheels or the motor) although my garagist has realigned the wheels, and the poor thing doesn't seem to have a "kick" in her: in other words, she is extremely show to respond when I need power. Once she is up to speed, she is fine though! Just extremely sluggish to get there.

No noise or anything alarming though, although she seems to be needing more frequent filling up...

I am a total novice at this! Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Many thanks!

Symptoms sound like MAF sensor is on the way out (or already away!).

The two issues may not be related. Vibration may be caused by a worn lower tie bar. Cheap and simple to replace.

Some of the diesel heads will be along with lots more advice on PCV filters MAF's and sensors. Just hang in there.

BTW welcome to the club

Hi there.

It always helps if you give your rough location. Members near to you then may be able offer recommendations for who can look at your car.

By the reference to Km's I assume therefore you are not in the UK?

Could be many things, although as WeeMan suggested, it could be the MAF. It may also be engine mounts, PCV Filter (when was it last changed or cleaned?) or a clogged EGR Valve.

Higher than normal fuel consumption can indicate MAF failure as the car is overfueling.

If you post your car's mileage this may also give some clues.

What have you managed to eliminate so far?

Oh, and welcome to the club!

Derek

Thank you so much to those of you who have replied so far...

For DerekOSB: In fact I live in Belgium, so indeed, maybe it'll be hard to find a person to help me here... my garagist is sweet, but seems to be a bit intimidated by the car .

She has 160,000kms on the clock and the garagist was also seeminly indicating something to do with air intake (this is the MAF sensor I believe?).

We've had the tires balanced... the problem with the vibration starts at aroung 100kms but is VERY shaky at 130. I daren't push her any higher to see whether she stops shaking at some point. I seem to hear a sound coming from the tires, something repetitive which I suppose could indicate a problem with a tire, but this is not just a small problem, the whole car rattles!

It just seems queer that the two happened to start simultaneously, or could this be a coincidence?

A friend of mine had a similar problem with his Galaxy and in his case they replaced the "flywheel" or whataver that is....

Try just sitting at idle then revving up slowly, at around 1800 revs, if it's buzzing and generally rattly lower tie-rod seems most likely (10min job at about £35)

And yes, MAf = Air Meter

Hi Bev

Okay, thanks for the additional info. 160,000 Km equates to 99,500 Miles or thereabouts.

How long have you had the car? In other words, what work do you know has already been done to the car?

The shake may well be related to an engine mount or as Grey Ghost suggested a tie bar. If these have not been checked then I would suggest schecking them over for excessive play.

We have an annual roadworthiness test in the UK referred to as an MOT, is there a Belgian equivalent? Has you car passed this test as that type of testing usually includes suspension checks for excessive play.

I am not a technical man so I hope some of the more knowledgeable members may respond later.

Yet more great advice! thanks!

I am the first and sole owner to the car, and quite frankly, nothing has never been changed because it is such a beautiful/reliable thing! So indeed, could be time for a major uplift...

Yes, the car was MOT'd (every year in Belgium once the car is 4) only last week and came up perfect, and I know that one of the key elements they control is the suspension...

Thanks for the tip WeeMan.... I'll go down and try her now...

Well, I've just been down and tried revved her up to 2000... nothing remarkable there, she doesn't rattle and no buzzing sound...

So I believe we can cross that one out?
