Thanks for all the replies. I am going to take the advice of robwijnstok and clean it off and paint the non friction parts. I have purchased some heat resistant Silver brake paint.

Discs always look great when new but soon rust.

Many thanks.

Ed.

dont understand why you would waste your time to remove a protective coating from the none friction parts only to paint them again,,total waste of time, changed my mitsubishi ones over a year ago and they are still greyish,,even paint fades on flakes in time...but do what you want, its your discs..

I was always told to use brake cleaner on the new parts prior to fitting.
My father always did it and Haynes recommends it so thats good enough for me.

It doesn;t do any harm and means you get better braking sooner.

The reason is the protective coating is quite soft and is only designed to protect the disc in storage and will not stand the heat generated by the brakes when in use.

The paint is bright silver and designred to stand temparatures of 190c. It is also oil, petrol and stone chip proof according to the blurb on the tin!!

It should make the discs look silver and hold back the rust that will form if left bare. It is only a cosmetic job but one that should keep the discs looking new and smart for longer.

The manufacturer of the disks should spray them with a decent heat resisting spray, but they don't.

My front and back disks are replaced in 2008 with original MR/Rover ones and they start to rust now on the non friction parts. This is not something I like to see on my 75. So now I have to take them off again for a respray. I think it is better to spray them before fitting.

Yes, mus be somthing else but paint. I had the rear discs switched last weekend. I tried to get the coating off by using thinner, but even if I rubbed the surface it would not come off.
