Default Brake Discs front coating

Dear all

can anybody help with this,

I have some new front brake discs to fit. They have a grey soft paint like coating on them. Does this need to be removed or will it wear off when in use?

Help appreciated.

Thanks

Ed.

I believe that is a protection coat to prevent discolouration and or rust when in storage. Should wear off as soon as you apply the brakes a couple of times.

I would always clean new discs with a solvent to remove ANY coatings or grease before fitting in order to avoid contaminating the new pads. Only costs a few pence but may save your neck.

You'll be fine to leave the coating on. My new MG-R discs had that kind of silvery-grey coating on them. They looked very smart but the (reputable) garage owner said "Nah, it'll wear off after you hit the brakes a couple of times". Sure enough, it did.

As said though, it's an anti-corrosion protection whilst they are in storage/transit.

it´s the back one´s you have to be careful with, the paint heats up and if you applie the handbrake the shoes stick to the disk, we have had a few volvos whos lineings has been ripped off when the owner forces the handbrake to release.. never come across a rusty disc that was just waxed protected,.

It's not a painted coating, but a metal coating. It's the same stuff as on some screws. As suggested, it wears of very quickly, but beware it seems to reduce the brake performance until it does. My handbrake was rubbish when I first replaced the rear discs.

OK, I must admit that cleaning off takes an extra 2 minutes

Like the other members have told you can leave the paint on the disks, but... I would take it off anyway, all the paint I mean.
Take it all off, degrease it as good as you can, and respray the disks with a good heat resistant paint 650ºC. Not on the sides where the pads will be pressed on while breaking.

Reason? After a year the disks will start to rust, and that is not a nice view. While the disks are still off it is a small job to do with a great and long lasting result.

Most new cars have this coating on too, and it isn't removed.

Whatever you do, don't overdo it with any copper grease or such like. I appeared to have done so and ended up cooking some of the stuff on one of my back discs and was overtaken by a small plume of smoke when I stopped at the end of a slip road!! Some copper grease had gotten onto the disc and formed a nice little "slag heap" where it met the pads.

A thorough going over with some Wynn's brake cleaner sorted that out though!
