Default rattling in the air intake pipes

Hi, i've got a 2.0V6 rover, V-reg, 140K miles .. just did some test drive circles, all OK (considering the age and mileage), only there's a strange rattling noise heard form the air intake pipes on the rear top of the engine, like there was a piece of plastic or something caught in there and bouncing from the pipe walls. Has anyone encountered something like this yet?

Regards,

Matt

There are two VIS actuators on the left of the inlet manifold. These are the usual culprits. The motor attempts to operate, in failing it re-trys again and again. Sounds just like a rattle.
First order of business, test the VIS actuators and replace as necessary. The top one is the Power VIS, the lower one is the Balance VIS.
Hopefully that is the cause of the rattle. The butterflys that the VIS actuators operate may be damaged in which case you are looking at a new inlet manifold.

The club has VIS tester, or you can attend a local or even the national meet where it is likely that a VIS tester will be available.

NB do not run your engine with a VIS actuator removed under any circumstances.

Hi Matt,

As GG says either VIS motors or inlet manifold. Where are you? somebody near may have a little box of tricks to test your motors.

As GG also said, the club has its own Testbox. Free to use for subscribed members

Hi Matt B.I've a 2.0 V6 with 67,000 mls on the clock.About Feb I noticed a rattle in the top of the engine, and after searching here I discovered it was probably the sliders in the manifold.Anyway I took off the upward facing motor, and sure enough the slider had come off and was just sitting in the bottom of the chamber.I finally bought a used Manifold off e-bay,after the seller assuring me it was good and tight, with no rattles.I got it for 170.00Euro inc P&P to Rep of Irl,which was a bargain.I fitted it myself in under 3 hours, including a stop for my dinner and 2 heavy showers. It's a bit of a fiddly job,but nothing unusual, the worst bit being removal of the 2 studs at the back,as you'
re working by touch cos you can't see down where they're situated.Mine came with 2 working motors as well. The car now drives brilliantly and the annoying rattle is gone.I'd reckon it was 170.00 Euro very well spent
Pat.

Bargain, two VIS motors will cost that alone, you got the manifold for free
