He's been with me from a puppy and we have both grown up together over these last 12 years. For those that know me well, will know that I never shut up about Oscar and that, is because I am so incredibly proud of him. He has been a very important, huge part of my life. Of course for the last near seven years, he's shared his life with Emma as well, who loves him just as much as I do. Not forgetting Bertie, our rescued Greyhound, who was once scared of everything and anything and full of anxiety. Oscar immediately adopted him as his own and helped him to grow, adapt and enjoy his life living in a home being a pet. So, it is with enormous sadness, that on 28th March at 3.45am, Oscar very sadly went to sleep. Emma, Bertie and myself were by his side, hopefully providing some comfort to our beautiful, gentle baby boy. We are all absolutely devastated, gutted and full of grief. The house feels quiet, empty and the life and soul has definitely left the party. Oscar could light up even the darkest of places just by being there. I miss him so much. Here's a small selection of photos of him. I've literally thousands, which I now need to work through. I'm going to get the best of them printed and put them into a photo album. Some are already printed and on the wall! I will eventually make a little memory box for him. It still doesn't feel real. 100_0932 by Philip Davies, on Flickr Oscar, My superstar. by Philip Davies, on Flickr Oscar by Philip Davies, on Flickr Oscar by Philip Davies, on Flickr My old buddy Oscar, taken over Christmas.. Best of friends.
Guard dogs for our ducks.-- No cats are allowed in our garden as the dogs shoo them off.

Thank you. He is sorely missed.
They are just as much family as anyone else. Oscar had been in and out of the vets a bit recently, with lameness on his back leg. The vet said that all was ok, he was just a bit stiff due to his age. He was prescribed daily medication and given an injection to "break the pain cycle." On top of that he was given some strong pain killers to only use if he had a flare up again. This was in January All settled down nicely with just his new daily medication. We even went on holiday shortly before his last day and he was great. Walking around with me on the cliffs of Pembrokeshire. He was like a puppy.. Anyway, the days leading up to his last, he went lame again. No worries we thought. We were told this would happen so gave him the stronger medication as instructed. It didn't help so I contacted the vet. I had a telephone consultation (because of the virus) and went and collected further medication to try the following morning, to compliment his other medication, as instructed. Anyway, tomorrow never came. We didn't want him to try walking up the stairs that night so we decided that we would all sleep downstairs with him so he had no temptation to brave the stairs and risk further hurting himself. I turned the lights off, laid on the floor next to him and held his paw. Normally he would pull his paw away after a few seconds, but he didn't. He just rested his head on my hand. I remember thinking "that's sweet, he doesn't usually do that" and with that, I fell asleep. I awoke at 3.30am to the sound of heavy breathing. I jumped up, turned the light on and woke Emma. I sat next to him and held his head, talking to him and stroking him. It was at this point we realised that the end was near and a few moments later he slipped away. It's the worst thing I've ever had to witness. Losing someone who you are that close to. I couldn't let him go through that on his own. It was a big shock and we really weren't expecting the outcome to be this. He was as sharp as a knife, even before we went to sleep he was dishing out high fives and smiling.

I feel your pain.
My wife and I have had many dogs in our long life. Always the sadness and pain. Can even affect you more than the loss of a human friend that you've known for many years. You can really, really bond to mans best friend. |

The bond I had with Oscar would certainly eclipse most friendships I've had with people!

Phil, that's awful news
When one of our beloved pets heads over the rainbow bridge it is devastating, and nothing anyone says can make it feel any less raw. Please accept our condolences Brian |
