Default 9 Crt Gold British ignition key.

Something slightly different.

Would anybody recognise or shed any light on the ignition key blank in the image.

It was a gift to a friends late mother, circa late 40's/early 50's.

Was this a thing back then, does the symbol, a crown I assume, depict anything in particular?

I have never heard of or seen anything like that. Searched google, aand few did pop up, mainly for Cadillacs though. Some additional and possible history HERE to start with.

Cant see them being of much use. I would have thought gold, regardless of purity, would be too soft to be of any lasting use - unless it was used as a necklace, doubling as a spare key for occasional use?

What series is stamped on the key, it might give a clue.

I would suggest it is part of the purchase of an expensive car and intended as a gift to be presented prior to the car being seen by the recipient. A sort of surprise with the car waiting in the wings. I doubt it would ever be cut to be used, more of a piece of jewellery.

the weird thing is that there was no car involved.
The lady was a navy officer more at sea than on land, not even sure she had a car at the time...

That looks like the old AA emergency phone box key shape
