Default Air conditioning for conservatory

Hi all, I'm considering this as a option for heating and cooling, does anyone have any experience of having one of these fitted

I am having one built shortly and have thought about it. I found some that had 2 outlet holes through the wall instead of having an outside condensor but not cheap. Anyway in the end I am having a solid roof which should help in the summer.

I love sitting in my conservatory as it has a glass roof and just sitting there watching the clouds pass over and the blue sky (occasionally!) is a real pleasure.

Not sure how much an air con unit would cost but for heating we use electric heaters which usually costs us nothing as we have Solar Panels and even ambient light is enough to offset a heater being used.

Last summer was hot!! - however we only used the Conservatory in the early mornings and evenings as we were outside during the day.

For us - the pleasure of “sky watching” in comfort during the colder months is so great that - ( Sorry Nick! ) we would never consider a solid roof.

A clear glass roof is amazing.

My thoughts are the same, glass roof is brilliant, air-conditioning unit fitted are about 1200 and I think we'll worth it

We did the other option, two large opening vents in the glass roof with a reversible fan and plenty of full height openers around the conservatory. Added to the initial cost but costs very little to keep cool. Underfloor heating was the other option so we can sit in there in mid winter.

One day last summer with it all closed up it was over 40 degrees, with all the windows open and the fan on the temp dropped to mid 20's in less that 15 mins.

Just out of interest -a question to the glass roof owners - if say a tile fell off the roof would it break the glass or is it strengthened in some way? We are going for a solid roof as it suits the house better. One of the guys who quoted said that glass roofs can break with such occurrences but he was a bit of a pushy NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- so we sent him on his way.

Ours is certainly “safety” glass and is certified to be able to withstand impacts. But our chap was very honest and said that if someone lobbed a brick at the glass “damage would be done”.

To date no one has !!!! Apparently it is very difficult these days with modern glass/double glazed panels to actually break them. In fact I understand hitting them in the middle with something just makes whatever hits the pane bounce off as the sealed unit acts like a kind of drum where the energy is absorbed by both panes of glass and the gas inbetween.

Am I right in thinking that to break a double glazed window you have to use a screwdriver or similar in one of the corners? Sure I heard that somewhere.

Our conservatory is about 7 years old - so far so good

Emergency Hammers for DG units have a hard pointed conical end. Look in the railway carriage next time you travel that way. (Automatic centre punch should also work)

Similar hammers for car use have a seat belt slitter to ease your exit from the seat.

could break but a replacement unit is dirt cheap. We have had 3 units go, bird strike on one, no idea on 3rd and second we think a strike of some description.
insurance over 1k to replace one small unit, local supplier, less then £200 which was less then our excess.

you can get self cleaning, Pilkington Blue seems to work.
