Breakfast At The Jail
This morning, it was my sisters turn to drive on our weekly day out.
Imagine my surprise when she drove us to Kirklevington Prison near Yarm. There, they have an amazing cafe and crafts facility. Situated just the right side of the wire is the cafe, offering very good fare at very reasonable prices. For example a breakfast bun, egg, bacon, and sausage with a large Americano for £3.25. Inmates due for release in the near future cook and serve the food, supervised by prison staff. The cafe itself is very nice, with eating inside, and outside at picnic tables. Alongside this there are crafts made by the lads doing there time, all very well made, and again, very well priced. Chickens roam free in the leisure areas, plants, hanging baskets etc are also for sale. Piece de resistance, is the car wash where you can have your pride and joy washed and dried for £5, mini valeted for £10, or full valet for £15 while you feast on your brekkie. All in all, it's a marvellous place to visit. I'm doing so again, for sure. |

You'd have to be careful not to complain about the food or service!

Did you check the boot for stowaways before you left
Seriously, it is an excellent facility. My next door neighbour spent many years working at the Prison before his untimely death - teaching inmates basic horticulture. A number of the inmates attended his funeral - handcuffed to prison staff mind you. I think the prison is very much an "almost ready for release" place - hence they try to give inmates some help to cope with the outside world.

As a retired warder I am pleased to hear good reviews of work done in prisons to help inmates rehabilitation and education on how to cope on the outside again.
However all the hard work done on the inside is of no use at all unless the support is in place for the inmates on their release back into the big bad world. This is where we tend to fall down on with penny pinching bean counters cutting the resources and budgets of the probation service and other outside agencies. Sorry for the rant but glad you enjoyed the experience and will go again. |
