Default 1.8T wont start - immobiliser?

Dash lights up and car has power, but on key turn literally nothing happens. It doesnt do the headlight flash flat battery thing. It central locks/unlocks fine with key fob. Drivers side key lock in handle qas disconnected by idiot previous owner. Have tried the immobiliser reset sequence. If i sit in the car and lock/unlock using the keyfob, every now and again instead of locking/unlocking all i hear is a click sound from near the heater controls. Any ideas? Battery in fob going flat?

Check the spade terminal on the starter motor

Come loose, or come off, and it's a quick and easy one to try first

Central locking has nothing what so ever to do with the immobiliser transponder in the key.

My 1.8T did the non starting trick once, turned the key and nothing, started eventually, got a replacement solenoid just in case but it never did it again.
