Smile panel gap ?

hi.
i have only had my mg for a couple of weeks after having verious landrovers fo the last 10 years , i have learnt a lot in a short time from this forum and have posted a couple of threads and got fast replys.

right this one.

my mg zt-t the bonnet looks open even when its shut, there is about a half inch gap between the bonnet and the bumper , the bonnet closes properly and is flush with the top and front of the wings and i can find no trace of damage , new parts , overspray ect. ive looked at other cars and some look the same and some dont . is this a common problem and can it be made any better.

many thanks.

stephen.

Is it a facelift? Unfortunately the facelift bumpers don't fit fantastically compared to the earlier cars. But they can be manipulated into fitting a bit better by putting washers between the top part of the bumper and the front panel.

We all have similar problems the way to deal with it is to by a shed load of stainless washers and release the bolts holding the bumper to the slam panel. Lift the bumper and insert the washers. It takes a fair bit of messing about but you should be able to reduce the gap by as much as half an inch.

Edit:- As Phil says.

My 05 facelift model has a sizeable gap between the bonnet and the top of the grill

Is it possible to raise the grill a bit rather than the whole bumper?

No, it's all one piece as is the Mk 1 ZT, MK2 ZT, and MK2 75. It's only the Mk1 75 that has the separate grill.

I had the same problem, however, when I attended the meet in the Lakes last year, Jules did me a great service and sorted it out in a couple of ticks! Really easy when you know how!
If you can get along to the various meets that we hold throughout the year, seek out a few of the experts present & get their advice. Well worth attending just for that!!!

Is it possible for someone who has completed this mod to do a quick 'How To' ?

From what I've read about the Mark II, there were faults in the bonnet curvature at the CAD stage which never got resolved. This means the front edge of the bonnet doesn't match the curve of the front moulding and closes too short. The fit between the wings and the front panel is OK, so closing the bonnet gap means you have to 'warp' the front panel to fit.

when you say the facelift is all one piece presumably the grill is detachable from the bumper as facelift grills are for sale on e bay I have had my bumper off to fit a horn and change the mesh so didnt try and detach the grill but it looks to me as thought it just clips into the bumper ?

Has anyone removed a facelift grill that could confirm please ?
