Default Intank fuel pump blowing 30a fuse

Hi
My 03 2.0 diesel ZTT just stopped suddenly and wouldn't restart
Found 30a fuse blown for ghe fuel pumps
Have disconnected the intank pump and am just running on under bonnet pump at moment with full tank of fuel, so at least car is running
I have no fuel gauge due to disconnecting it
Any idea what can cause this pump to be blowing the fuse?
Does the pump just seize up when packed in and is maybe trying to draw to much current in order for it to try run?
I am going to put voltage across the pump to see if it still runs and works properly when I can get time
Also will ghe under bonnet pump be prone to failure now that it's running on its own
Thanks in advance
Willie

Default Pumps

The pumps usually just wear out and yes, running just the underbonnet on its own will shorten its life. I assume that you have more than half a tank of fuel?
Blowing fuse could be anything from a pump fault to a chafed wire.

A faulty pump could well cause a fuse blow - they usually wear out due to brush erosion, however it's possible the pump could seize completely due to bearing failure - that'd likely blow the fuse.

I have both pumps:

The pump most likely is finished. It could be seized or it could be burnt out. If you take the pump out and apply 12 V power, alternating the + and -, it can sometimes be possible to get it to run, if something has physically blocked the impeller. But chances are you need a new one.

Cheers lads
Will check pump first make sure it's dead and not a shorted wire
Am leaning towards bad pump as it just went on me with no notice
Will report back
Thanks

Just put 12v across pin 2 and pin 5 on the intank pump
Jammed up so must be trying to draw to many amps to get it going and blowing fuse
New pump so!

First time I've heard of this happening. I take it you do have continuity?

They usually go open circuit due to the commutators wearing down to nothing, with the brushes still looking like new.

When you replace it, and if you strip it down do post up the cause of the problem.

Fitted second hand pump and sorted the problem
As expected jammed pump was pulling to much current trying to run it and blowing ghe fuse
