Default Remote Stereo Controls Not Working

The remote stereo controls on my steering wheel have taken to working intermittently. It has only happened twice now but for one or two days the controls don't work and then suddenly they work again. I have done nothing to instigate this (unless fiddling with the SRS connection under the driver's seat counts). Can anyone help?

If your car is fitted with a Kenwood Head Unit then it is likely the ir transmitter diode is being blocked. Have a read here:

It's sorted!! I simply removed the CD case from the cubby-hole above the stereo and now the remote control works.

Now that could qualify for shortest and easiest "how to" ever!

Thanks again Mike.

Had the same problem, and yes it was a CD case in the cubby hole above the stereo.
I wonder how many times this has happend, as its the perfect place for one to put the empty case!

Just had the same problem, I was fitting wires behind stereo so had the stereo out and before screwing everything back in I tried it out to ensure it worked. The stereo was dangling out of the hole and the wheel controls didn;t work. Took my 20 mins of checking everything I had done before i came inside and found this thread.

Oh the simple ones are the best.

silly question, but where is the transmitter that the steering wheel switches actuate?
I presume the wheel switch loom is exactly the same on all cars?

follow the link above and you see the ir link. the box that controls the ir seems to sit behind the stereo.... a little box above the bracket at the back of the stereo.

yes I'd read that - but presumed that bit was the one connected to the stereo to take the signal! I see now....
