Default Typical response . . .

As you may know, Ford want to transfer the building of their new Transit from their Southampton plant to a plant in Turkey. The Southampton plant is unproductive, uneconomic and not suitable for the new vehicle.

So what do the workers at Southampton do - they prove Ford's point by walking out . . .

How many options did they have TF?
What would you have done?
At the end of the day money speaks. Do your manufacturing where people work for peanuts. When they want walnuts, move it somewhere else. Who cares if the local economy collapses? Not the fat cats who own the companies, they don't live in downtown Southampton et al do they?

Just my 2 centimes worth.

Thing is, what have they got to loose by walking out? Pretty obvious the plant will close whatever they do, may as well give Ford a quick kick in the nuts financially by stopping production! Ford obviously don't care about them, why should the feeling be reciprocated?

Froggy:

The workers at Ford have walked out for a number of reasons in the past, holding the company to ransom for unrealistic demands on conditions and wages. They are one of the reasons why the plants in the UK are unproductive andwhy Southampton is uneconomical to run in its present form and eneconomical to pump in the millions needed. Their actions over the last 25 years ( way above inflation wage increases, unproductive work practices) have finally come back to bite them.

mach1rob:

What have they got to lose by walking out? What have Ford got to lose by them walking out? They are already on a 4 day week because Ford want to run the plant down.
