Cooling fan question

Hello
I have read the many threads based on this problem but still am a little confused. I have zt 120 1.8. I am worried that low speed on my fan is not wrkin. Wen the zircon is switched on the fan kicks in, it stays on constant until the zircon is switched off, it just sounds very fast n loud. Is this ok.

Hello Steven,

Your 2004 car probably has a 2 speed fan. With a cold engine, press the 'demist' button on your air conditioning control panel. Is the fan running? If it is, then that's the slow speed! If it isn't then you need to replace your resistor.

Sry must of put wrong year in profile. Mine is a 53 plate. Had a look and can't see the resistor, does this mean I have a 3 speed fan and is it bad news.

Seems to me that if it comes on when it should (i.e. cold engine, first thing in the morning say, push the demist buton or switch on the zircon and the fan starts up) then your slow speed is working. It is quite a noisy fan, being quite substantial as it is.

For reference, if you can't see the resistor through the front grille at about 2 o'clock position it doesn't mean it's not there (some were hidden away), but there's a decent chance you have a 3-speed fan. Our 03 plate car does.

Steven,

1.8 litre engines were not fitted with 3 speed fans, only two speed.
Check that it's working properly by doing the test I described in the second posting. Don't take any chances with the cooling system on the 1.8.

As I said, provided that the engine was cold at the time (to avoid the possibility of coolant temperature triggering the fan) it sounds as if you have nothing to worry about Steven.
