Default Urgent - No Drive

Got a problem with the ZT.

Was driving along a country road, let off the throttle to slow for a bend, as I came out I realized I was doing ~800 RPM (idling). Changed gear, still coasting along. Realized something was wrong, coasted to a stop at the side of the road.

Once i'd stopped, I tried to pull away - I put it in first, and as I let the clutch I could feel it bite a little but give up. Can put it in any gear I like (with or without the clutch) but it's got no drive in any (even reverse), and doesn't stall, just sits there, idling. No weird noises, either when idling, changing gear or when it's "in" gear. It just sounds like it's constantly idling (because it is).

Clutch feels normal, but have had an odd loud "clattering" occasionally (i.e. maybe 5 times since I've had the car), getting more frequent up until the other day. Normally turning the engine off / on fixes this, but not the other day.

Got towed home, so the car is now parked on the drive.

Technical details - 2004 MG ZT 135+ Diesel Manual, almost 104k miles, been cared for well, has had all the usual mods done to it by me / the previous owners, notably had a Synergy since I bought it (so at least 25k miles), been mine for just over a year. Full details - www.tinyurl.com/JakgZT

I originally suspected the clutch (only because it seems to be the most common point of failure), but my Dad is not so sure (as the pedal feels fine and you can engage any gear)

Any suggestions as to what it could be?

EDIT - Changing gear is possible with or without the clutch, but harder without the clutch.

Have you tried removing the synergy box?

I had a similar issue to this when I used the wrong fuel rail connection on my tuning box.

Car just say idleing and no pedals worked.

How do I remove it (I didn't fit it). I did turn it up to 10 (from 7) 2 days ago... and I have been doing a *lot* of wiring in the last 2 days, both in the car and in the engine bay, so it could be that.

Surely something that just alters the MAF readings (tricking more fuel in) couldn't alter this?

Start with the simple, easy stuff first. Unplug it and if it revs higher than 800rpm, thats where the problem lays.

It can rev higher than 800 RPM (it can go all the way to the redline), but it just doesn't actually move the car.

Just to add a bit further - I can rev it no problem at all, the brakes work fine (with the engine on obviously) it's just the clutch at all. I'm very dubious the Synergy could do this, but i'd love it if it was true...

I'll go and play with the Synergy in a bit.

Hi Jack,
Sorry for you,
I am afraid it is a clutch related problem
Slipping mechanism...
Is it genuine ?

But don't worry it is quite feasible preferably in summer!

Then peaceful for another 100.000

Mike

Hasn't slipped (even with probably 150-160 BHP going though it).

No idea whats in it - to my knowledge the clutch has never been changed, but I can't guarantee this.

DIY clutch replacement looks a little painful for me to be honest, especially when Mr Clutch want ~£320 for it.
