Air Conditioning

I very rarely turn on my AC unless it is very warm. Is there any way of checking if it is efficient apart from turning it on and feeling if it is cold? Thanks

When the system is running, open the bonnet and look for the two bright silver pipes on the drivers side wing. The large bore pipe should get very cold very quickly, and the small bore pipe will get lukewarm.

If the big pipe doesn't get cold, then the system needs checking 'cos it may need a regas. If the small pipe gets very hot, then there could be fan/compressor problems.

Thanks for the gen. If I do need to get it a regas, whats the approximate cost?

It does pay to run it for a short time regularly even in winter to keep it operating properly Dave

Probably looking at around £45 for a recharge, one of the only things I would ever go to Kwikfit for.

The usual advice is to run the a/c for 3 or 4 minutes every week so that the oil in the gas gets sent through the system. Stops the seals detoriorating, if I remember...

Not a good idea David. Use your air conditioning when it's raining; it will dehumidify the passenger compartment which will make the journey much more comfortable. Also as John correctly says:

When the seals dry out you will lose your refrigerant gas, and it will cost you money to have it replaced.
