Unhappy Intermittent temp gauge failure 1.8p k16 2003

Hi
Can anyone cast any light and information on an intermittent temperature gauge failure [usually on long distance] with gauge in cab just dropping away to zero - turn off engine - wait - usually works again - sender unit has been replaced recently which stopped the problem but its started up again!! Any help or tips gratefully received. Thx
Steve

Try disconecting the battery for half hour, make sure you have any radio codes etc first though..

An even better idea is to install one of the superb guages designed and made by a member on here, umm.. umm.., just wish i could remember his name though.. heh heh.. But a quick search should find it - him.

Could be a faulty connector or cable to the sensor. The radiator fan should trip on at high speed when the sensor signal is lost.

As T-Cut says the fan should kick in if the temp sensor signal is lost. The fact that you said 'long distance' was a factor I would also check the thermostat - the gauge would rise when stationary as opposed to switching the car off then back on.

You could also try running the OBD on the instrument pack and see if that shows anything different.
